Why McDonald’s is sporting a golden ‘W’ for women

No, you don’t need to get your eyes checked: That’s a “W” popping up today at McDonald’s.

The fast-food company recognized International Women’s Day on Thursday by turning its iconic golden arches logo upside down in the shape of the letter “W” on its social media channels and by supplying special uniforms and other packaging at 100 of its restaurants.

At least one McDonald’s in Lynwood, Calif., physically changed its signage and turned its arches upside down.

“We have a long history of supporting women in the workplace, giving them the opportunity to grow and succeed,” McDonald’s spokeswoman Lauren Altmin told CNBC. “In the U.S. we take pride in our diversity.”

The company, in a video, said that six out of every 10 of its managers in the U.S. are women.

And because this is Texas, at least one fan of another fast-food giant chimed in:

Other companies are also recognizing women, Newsweek reported. Mattel rolled out a line of Barbie dolls based on real women, including Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, Winter Olympics gold medal-winning snowboarder Chloe Kim and artist Frida Kahlo.

In addition,  Brawny replaced the man in its paper towel logo with a woman — something it has done in years past — and Johnnie Walker is putting a woman on its logo for a limited edition “Jane Walker” whiskey bottle, The Hill reported.
