With The Governors Ball hitting NYC this weekend music fans have a lot to be excited about however, Calpurnia fans that couldn’t get their hands on passes for this weekend were treated to an added performance ahead of their Gov Ball appearance.
Fans were buzzing in the lines outside of the venue that stretched around the entire block despite the onslaught of rain. Dozens of groups of fans huddled under umbrellas chatting enthusiastically proved that the downpour could not diminish the excitement.
The show opened with The So So Glos and they quickly got the crowds attention. Their high energy performance definitely helped hype up the crowd. They received lots of cheers and even some dancing. Not long after, Calpurnia took to the stage which was met with instant enthusiasm and delighted yelling. The crowd was instantly electrified when they opened with Wasting Time off their EP Scout. They kept the energy with Greyhound which was definitely a favorite among fans. This was followed by a Pixies cover of Where Is My Mind which parents in the crowd were more than delighted to join in on.
Throughout their set, Calpurnia also played three more covers including Love Buzz by Nirvana, Don’t Let Me Down by The Beatles, and Marquee Moon by Television. They closed out their performance with City Boy which was of course, another hit. There was not a single disappointed face in the horde of people. Even the sea of parents in the back seemed captivated by Calpurnia’s performance.
Plenty of eyes were on lead guitarist and vocalist Ayla Tesler-Mabe who dazzled the crowd with her never ending smiles. Bassist Jack Anderson captured some laughs with his joyful quips. However, no member was left without affection. Malcolm Craigs talents on the drums did not go unnoticed and there was no love lost for lead singer Finn Wolfhard who received plenty of cheerful screams.
Though this was only a two band bill, it was more than fulfilling for all who had the pleasure of experiencing it.
