Fancy Hagood stepped on the scene with an unforgettable pop debut, hitting the Billboard charts and singing with A-list celebrities like Ariana Grande and Meghan Trainor. Hagood’s first album, ‘Southern Curiosity,’ departed from the pop sound he previously established and returned to his Nashville roots. The album asserted Hagood as an authentic writer, a vocal powerhouse, and a force to be reckoned with. Country Queer called his lyrics “straightforwardly revolutionary with their explicitly queer love stories,” and more recently, he’s been featured in American Songwriter, People Magazine and Rolling Stone.
This year, Hagood dropped his single “Bored,” fusing his previous identities in pop and country while encapsulating his gift for narrative storytelling. There’s only more to come for this songwriting superstar.
With a track record like this, it’s time to answer the question his previous moniker posed once and for all: who is Fancy?
1. A tornado destroyed his apartment
In March of 2020, a tornado rampaged through Nashville and left hundreds injured and displaced. Hagood was one of many who lost everything to the storm. In an Instagram post detailing the event, Hagood said it was the “scariest moment of his entire life,” as he was inside the building at the time, covering his head
as the roof and drywall crumbled around him. Had his friends not woken him up via text to seek shelter, he might’ve still been in his bed and could’ve lost his life. Thankfully, he received an outpouring of support from his friends and his community, including from the charity, Music Health Alliance. To hear the full story, watch Hagood’s interview on the show, The Doctors.
2. His personality is just as magnetic as his music
Before he was a superstar, Hagood worked at Forever 21 where he got a reputation for his bold clothing, full makeup, manicured nails, and platinum blond hair. His expressive fashion earned him the nickname “Fancy” from his coworkers, and Hagood told People Magazine that it was the first time he’d felt empowered by a nickname, so it stuck.
Since, Hagood’s remained unapologetically Fancy. Just one look at his Instagram, and you’ll see the best outfits, hilarious reels, adorable moments with his partner, and an overall keen sense of creativity.
3. He guest-starred on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee earlier this month
Singing his newest single, “Bored,” Hagood left viewers in awe with his vulnerable performance. Returning to TV was 7 years in the making for Hagood. Now an independent artist Hagood earned a late night TV spot this past spring, reinventing his brand with guitar in hand and performing “Bored”. The song serves as a commentary on the dissonance between public presentation and private struggles, inspired by some of Hagood’s own inner demons. Watch his captivating ballad HERE.
4. He hosts his own Apple Music Country Radio Show
Hagood’s voice isn’t just heard in song; earlier this year, he launched his radio show “Trailblazers Radio with Fancy Hagood,” becoming both the ‘spinnee’ and the spinner. The show features musicians who Hagood views as risk-taking artists within the country genre, breaking down barriers and changing what country can sound and look like. He’s gone in-depth with some of music’s biggest stars, including Orville Peck, Noah Cyrus, and Kacey Musgraves – to name a few. The show airs bi-weekly on Wednesdays on Apple Music Country at 2 p.m. PT / 4 p.m. CT. You can listen to previous episodes here.
5. His resume includes work with Ariana Grande, Little Big Town, Elle King and more
Hagood entered the spotlight when he released his massive collaboration “Boys Like You,” featuring both Meghan Trainor and Ariana Grande. On the day of the release, the three performed an unforgettable debut live on Dancing with the Stars. Behind the scenes, Hagood’s songwriting talents have been lent to industry icons like Little Big Town, Rascal Flatts and Christina Aguilera. More recently, Hagood just got off the road after touring alongside Elle King. He’s even contributed backing vocals to several projects, including albums for artists such as Lucy Hale and Kacey Musgraves. And there’s only more incredible music to come from this gifted artist. Definitely keep him in your line of vision.
