Can you believe it’s been four years since the Arctic Monkeys released their last record? The British rawk idols had been huge in their homeland since their 2006 debut, but the sultry, R&B grooves of 2013’s AM brought them newfound notoriety; lead single “Do I Wanna Know?” became their first U.S. No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart and later, two other tracks made the top 5 of the tally. “Do I Wanna Know?” even cracked the Hot 100 (and spent 20 weeks there!), another first for the band. But rather than quickly follow on that success, Alex Turner and company put off work on LP number six… at least until quite recently.
The news comes from, of all places, a motorcycling magazine called For the Ride, which recently spent a day at the tracks with Arctic Monkeys bassist Nick O’Malley and Reverend and the Makers drummer Ryan Jenkinson. A day after the hangout (which took place this month), the Monkeys apparently began recording their new album at some “secret location.” O’Malley expects the album to be out next year, quipping, “If it isn’t, we’ve got problems.”
So there you have it — the new Arctic Monkeys album is at least in the early stages of becoming a real, tangible thing. The article doesn’t offer much else in terms of band-related news, but for the Monkeys, this is the most we’ve heard in some time.
Since wrapping AM touring in late 2014, frontman Alex Turner released the sophomore album from his side project, the Last Shadow Puppets, in April 2016.
As we patiently await the next Arctic Monkeys collection, we leave you with the video for “Do I Wanna Know?”
