American surf rockers, Best Coast, brought their Always Tomorrow tour to the Ogden Theatre in Denver, Colorado on March 7th. American punk rockers, Mannequin Pussy, provided support.

Colfax Avenue was full of life with recent weather bringing a tease of spring that was reminiscent of a California night. Outside of the Ogden Theatre fans lined up and waited to be let in. It was an eclectic group of fans. Some would fit right into Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video from the 90’s, while others were ready to join in on the Biggie vs. Tupac debate with their hip-hop inspired fashion. There was a heavy hip fashion vibe paired with many of smiles on the fans faces.

First up was Philadelphia’s own Mannequin Pussy. The quartet made their way on stage with fans shouting and letting out all their anticipation anxiety from waiting for the show to begin. The entire band exploded on stage and fans attention was automatically geared towards the dynamic frontwoman, Marisa Dabice.

Her stage presence is what legends are made of. She donned cheetah pants with a black top which added to her animal like ferocity on stage. As they cruised through crowd favorites, “Drunk II, Patience, and Romance” the fans created a jump pit. Now you might be asking yourself what a jump pit is. Well it’s exactly what it sounds like, fans jumping wildly together to the beat of the music all while shouting what words they knew. Mannequin Pussy came, saw, and conquered the stage.

After a 20-minute interlude, Best Coast strolled onto the stage with a neon sign illuminated in the background that read, “Always Tomorrow” promoting their latest album. The California rockers wasted no time and started playing their dreamy surf inspired alternative rock. Guitarist and vocalist, Bethany Cosentino, strutted her stuff in her blue dress suit and gold shoes. Her voice took fans to California for that night. Her calm, cool, and collected stage presence was warm and inviting. They played through songs of new and old. Fan favorites, “Master of My Own Mind, Feeling Okay, and When I’m With You” got the crowd singing and swaying from side to side. The jump pit made a couple of appearances during their set.

Bob Bruno was on the guitar for the entire show. For their studio recordings he plays multiple instruments but for live shows he proudly rips through all the guitar riffs. Bruno’s long hair was blown by fans which created a surreal effect accentuated by the pink lighting in the background. He was also rocking a sweet Ozzy Osbourne shirt. There was a moment where they brought politics into their set. Consentino mentioned how they were pro Bernie Sanders and how he won the Primary Presidential Election in California. The fans erupted into a loud roar with the mention of the Democratic candidate (see video). Best Coast created a west coast atmosphere inside the Ogden Theatre to the delight of all in attendance. The night was filled with great musicianship, friendly fans, and weather to match the vibe of the coastal grooves that filled the air.
