CHARLIE MONTOYO NAMED 13TH BLUE JAYS MANAGER
The TORONTO BLUE JAYS today announced CHARLIE MONTOYO has been named the 13th Manager in club history, agreeing to a three-year contract through the 2021 season with a team option for 2022. The Blue Jays will introduce Montoyo during a press conference on Monday, Oct. 29 at Rogers Centre. Additional details will be provided in the coming days.
Montoyo, 53, spent the 2018 season as Bench Coach for the Tampa Bay Rays. Prior to that, he spent three seasons as the club’s Third Base Coach after an 18-year stretch managing Minor League teams within the Rays organization. The native of Manatí, Puerto Rico, was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame in 2016 after posting a 633-515 (.551) record over eight seasons as Manager of the Triple-A Durham Bulls, which included seven International League South Division Titles, six International League finals appearances, and two Governors’ Cup championships (2009 & 2013).

Montoyo was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth round of the 1987 First-Year Player Draft. He then spent 10 years as a professional infielder, including four Major League games with the Montreal Expos in 1993.
The product of San Jose De Anza Junior College and Louisiana Tech University compiled a Minor League managerial record of 1,266-1,142 (.526) and also coached Team Puerto Rico in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He won a Southern League title while managing the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits in 2006 and claimed a Short-A division title with Hudson Valley in 1998.
