Defined by a sound that emphasizes high-speed piano arpeggios, behind-the-beat flows, and off-color lyrical witticisms, Detroit has established itself as one of the deepest and most exciting rap regions. Following in the footsteps of headline-grabbers like Tee Grizzley, Sada Baby, and Teejayx6, the new generation looks to assert itself with Mudd Classics ,Vol. 1, a new compilation tape that highlights the Motor City’s up-and-coming rappers. Curated by Slitwristshawty, a rising tastemaker in the city, Mudd Classics, Vol. 1 showcases a rising crop of world-weary wordsmiths, who pack bunches of quotable bars into small packages–no song on the tape passes the 2:30 minute mark, and many clock in under 2 minutes.

Hosted by BloodBoyGoon and presented by R Baron Group, the new collection offers the spotlight to a diverse array of undiscovered rhymers eager for the opportunity to show off their styles and work their way out of the mud. Mudd Classics Vol. 1 releases on August 5th.

“The project is a showcase of the underground talent the city of Detroit has,” says Slitwristshawty, a D-Town native of Puerto Rican and Panamanian descent. “Detroit has one of the best rap scenes right now and I just wanna make sure I bring some new sounds and artist to the world. We’re here, and here to stay forever!”

Today, the team behind Mudd Classics, Vol. 1 shares the first taste of the upcoming tape–B2B,” a video single by Skoot Luciano and BigTicketJuice. Produced by Baby Gvee, “B2B” is an uptempo Detroit-style banger, built on a menacing piano line and glistening synth strings, as Skoot and Juice trade irreverent bars at a breakneck pace: “Told the b*tch I’m leaving now she’s sick with the teary eyes/I knew all h*es was the same, even Siri lies,” spits Skoot Luciano. Directed by AXA, the video perfectly relays the duo’s electric chemistry and their grimy surroundings, as the two teenaged rappers talk their smack on a leather futon, as they spark up amidst digital percs and dollar bills.
