K. Flay – an edgy, lively performace

Salt Lake City, UT – May 6, 2018 – As a music and tour photographer based in Salt Lake City, Utah, I’ve seen a lot of really cool performances.  K. Flay however, has been on my bucket list for quite some time.

They took the stage right at 9:15 as scheduled to a sold out crowd at The Complex.  Kristine, who sprung into the music world accidentally in the bay area while attending college at Stanford, is a lyrical genius.  She’s real, and her lyrics aren’t afraid to talk about the darkness this life can bring along with the bright spots along the way.  She doesn’t sugar coat her view of the world and it’s so refreshing.

The bands quick beats are electric, mixing a bit of hip hop with rock and pop.   She has a very unique voice that is edgy as hell, yet beautiful.  And did I mention she can rhyme with the best?

One thing I loved about the show was the stage and lights.  It’s a crowd pleaser and it’s easy to love her performance.  She connects with the crowd and has amazing stage presence.  She typcially dresses all in black with killer boots to, well, boot.  She owns the stage.  Back and forth, hair whips, jumping and rocking out!  She also shows emotion with her music falling to her knees at the front of the stage during more dramatic moments giving the front row a glimpse into the raw expressions on her face.

A few of my favorite songs on the set list were “High Enough“, and “Dreamers“.  I’ve linked them to Spotify for your listening pleasure.

All in all, I was impressed and frankly, can’t wait to see her live again.
