COMPANION TO RECENTLY RELEASED SOPHOMORE ALBUM GOOD, MORNING AMERICA
RELEASES AMANDA SHIRES T-SHIRT COLLAB IN CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY
Los Angeles singer/songwriter Lawrence Rothman has released their first spoken word album Not a Son. A nine-track accompaniment to their recent sophomore LP Good Morning, America – it features Lawrence’s emotive spoken word set to the backdrop of compelling and atmospheric instrumentals played by Dennis Ham (Thundercat), the legendary Jim Keltner (John Lennon, Perfume Genius, Bob Dylan), Pino Paladino (The Who, Nine Inch Nails, D’Angel), Marry Lattimore and Yves Rothman as Lawrence leads on piano, modular synth, and guitar. Lawrence notes:
I have been writing poetry and short stories since before I wrote songs. I put out a book titled Postmortem Bliss that had a spoken word companion and was turned into a short film for Turner Classics many years ago. The film was driven by a spoken word piece put to music. For the last few years I have been experimenting with putting my poetry to music and showed it to a few friends who encouraged me to pursue it. Daily to start my day l listen to poetry readings ranging from Robert Frost to William Burroughs . It helps get my creativity going and calm my anxious hyper active mind. With this collection I went for a improvised feeling, a Jack Keourac, Lou Reed inspired delivery meets Radiohead Miles Davis free form sonic. I set out to capture a snapshot style performance mostly done live with a band. My words framed by music that complimented my inner conversation.
My place in this world I have struggled with my whole life, not feeling a community because of my gender identity. Tho times have changed and do feel we are moving in more inclusive direction- I still struggle daily with where I belong in this world and my appearance , makeup clothes I wear the way gets picked over every time I leave my house. My pronoun gets a confused look when I correct someone that I am they/them not he/him. Its mentally exhausting….These words explore my inner dialog and the fight that goes on inside my mind and under my skin throughout my whole life. I needed an outlet to express these emotions, in a conversational way and not through songs.
I am also releasing a T-shirt for national coming out day with a young designer who works for Manuel Cuevas the T-shirt reads They/Them or Y’all works. My best friend Amanda Shires came up with it cause its what she says to everyone down south when Im working with her!
Rothman’s debut album The Book of Law was released in 2017 to much acclaim and wonder. It explored the artist’s struggle with gender identity, family conflict, and social alienation through a collection of Avant pop confessionals. Their sophomore album landed July 16th, a work that set out to create a sonic world that reverses course from the seemingly omnipresent injustices of recent times, building a landscape that places emphasis on equality and freedom of expression above all – where “you don’t have to check a male or female box ever again and bands can sound like Tom Petty and Anohni on the same record.
