Opening up like never before, platinum-certified Nigerian-Canadian rapper, singer, and songwriter Dax teams up with three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning Diamond-selling icon Darius Rucker on a brand new version of his rising hit “To Be A Man” out now on RECORDS / Columbia Records.
Stark piano underlines the track’s soft beat as the lyrics echo with unfiltered and undeniable honesty. Darius reaches out to a quiet generation of males as he pleads, “I think about all the men out there who feel like I do now who are screaming on the inside but won’t make a sound.” Meanwhile, Dax responds with a heartfelt and hypnotic hook, “We can’t hide ourselves. We don’t expect you to understand. We just hope to explain to you what it’s like to be a man.” The accompanying visual spotlights Darius and Dax as they address the camera outside of a pickup truck. It intercuts closeups of a policeman, a fireman, a veteran, and more, paying homage to their tireless and unassuming efforts to keep the world safe. Ultimately, the clip matches the vibe of the track itself.
The original version of “To Be A Man” soundtracked a viral clip on Instagram posted by Motivation Is The Fuel this summer, gathering a staggering 33K “likes.” Thus far, it has generated over 14 million Spotify streams, and it serves as a standout from Dax’s 2023 EP What is life? He spoke to Digital Journal about the EP, while Essentially Pop praised, “The new EP may be some of DAX’s most experimental work yet, pushing the boundaries of what’s considered hip hop, while sounding brilliant all the way through.”
What is life? bends genres and pushes boundaries as Dax continues to make a name for himself in the music industry by creating topic-driven music that sparks conversation. The 7-track project featured four new songs as well as previously released singles “God’s Eyes,” “To Be A Man,” and “Dear Alcohol,” which is officially certified Platinum by the RIAA marking Dax’s first track to sell more than one million copies in the US.
Breaking through on his own terms with over 1 billion streams and 1 billion YouTube views to date, 2022 proved to be a pivotal year for Dax with the releases of “Depression” and “Dear Alcohol,” which has amassed over 275M worldwide streams to date. Dax has continued that momentum in 2023 with a JUNO Award nomination for ‘Breakout Artist of the Year,’ a recent television performance on CBC’s Canada Day national broadcast, the release of What is Life, and his upcoming North American tour.
