Samia Shares Double Single “ Breathing Song ” + “ Honey ”
FROM SOPHOMORE ALBUM HONEY
OUT THIS FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2023 VIA Grand Jury
Samia shares two new songs off her highly anticipated sophomore album, Honey , just ahead of its release this Friday, January 27th, 2023 via Grand Jury Music: “ Breathing Song ,” and the album’s title track, “ Honey .”The release of these two singles comes with a striking new video for “ Honey ” directed by longtime collaborator Jacq Justice.
The video for Honey ’s title track symbolically captures the album’s recurrent themes of interconnectivity, community, vulnerability, accountability, and friendship as two different versions of Samia perform; one onstage to the warm embrace of a friendly audience singing along with every word, and one on display in an empty bar singing to nothing but a watchful camera lens.
Samia shares: Tried writing “Breathing Song” a thousand times and couldn’t get it right. Played one of its iterations for Molly Sarlé on zoom and she was like “you just told me a really powerful story before you played this, write it again and just tell the story,” so I did; I just said what happened, from my perspective. Got to play it for her again when it was finished and we cried. “Honey” takes place in the same world as “Breathing Song.” It’s about always being drunk enough that you don’t have to look around. To me it’s the saddest song I’ve ever written, because it’s mocking my attempt to convince people I was good. Caleb Wright turned it into a campfire song, though, and I love that it can be interpreted as fun too.
“Breathing Song” and “Honey” follow the December release of another pair of companion songs from the album, “ Pink Balloon ” and “Sea Lions ,” that represent different stages in the dissolution of a relationship, accompanied by a set of videos Samia directed with Jacq Justice . “ Mad At Me ,” the bold, irresistible single from November showcases Samia’s trademark courage-via-paradoxical-display-of-vulnerability, and an unabashedly bubblegum melody. “Mad At Me” was produced with Rostam and Caleb Wright , and features Papa MBye . Released with a playfully brazen video , it followed lead single “ Kill Her Freak Out ,” the spare, unflinching album opener that was shared in September with the album’s announcement, accompanied by a video starring Academy Award-nominated actor Lucas Hedges.
Samia completed a leg of UK tour in November supporting Maggie Rogers that found Samia winning over huge audiences, along with a triumphant Sold-Out headline show at London’s XOYO where she was joined onstage by Orla Gartland and Katie Gregson-Macleod(with notable attendees including King Krule and Okay Kaya), and a set at Pitchfork Festival London alongside Cate Le Bon and Courtney Barnett among others. Next up, Samia will embark on a headline tour of North America following the release of Honey that runs from early February into March. SEE THE FULL LIST OF DATES BELOW.

There’s a line on Honey , the upcoming album from Nashville-via-NYC songwriter Samia , about Aspen Grove, a collection of 40,000 trees in the plains of North America, all connected by a single expansive root system. There’s no stronger metaphor for the audience the 25-year-old empathy engine has been generating since she began releasing music seven years ago. Her songs, her fans, her friends: one enormous, interconnected ecosystem.
Honey , comprised of eleven new moments of catharsis , is by and for that organism. The album was recorded at North Carolina studio Betty’s –- owned and operated by Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sandborn and Amelia Meath , frequent touring partners of Samia’s. It was produced by Caleb Wright , part of the team that helmed The Baby, Samia’s “ excellent 2020 debut ” ( Pitchfork ) , and a founding member of one of Samia’s favorite bands, The Happy Children. It features some of her nearest and dearest friends: Christian Lee Hutson , Briston Maroney , Jake Luppen , Raffaella . Its songs were surreptitiously road tested for her devotees while opening for Lucy Dacus , Courtney Barnett , and more.
Samia shares the following about Honey : “This record is about learning to see the love around you. Sometimes the only thing I can be certain of is the way it feels. Even when I zoom all the way out, the little things matter the most. I was trying to imagine looking back at the end of life and what I’d have to say about it right now. This is a little bit of it. Telling stories, making amends, trying to show people I love them. It’s a community record – I made it with Caleb Wright and our friends in the woods in North Carolina.”
The album has two different sequences – one for continuous play on digital & CD and one for a side break listening experience on vinyl and cassette. The vinyl features its own unique mix and master tailored to the LP experience, while the album will also be available on Apple Music & other retailers in Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio. Limited edition copies of the vinyl purchased at indie retail feature an exclusive flexidisc of Samia covering The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Maps,” while deluxe edition copies purchased from her webstore or Bandcamp feature an exclusive flexidisc of Samia covering “Country” by Porches.
