Slauson Malone 1 releases new album ‘EXCELSIOR’
NORTH AMERICAN TOUR STARTS NEXT WEEK
Multi-disciplinary artist Jasper Marsalis releases his debut album as Slauson Malone 1, EXCELSIOR. The album is his first release on the iconic label Warp Records andreceived early praise ahead of its release from The New York Times, who described it as “deeply ambitious, engaging and full of winning eccentricities,” and Pitchfork highlighted it in their list of the most anticipated releases coming this fall.
EXCELSIOR, recorded over the last 5 years, signifies the evolution from Slauson Malone to Slauson Malone 1, presenting a rejuvenated and deeply personal new musical identity for Marsalis. It embodies a distinctive, at times intense persona, exploring themes of love and hate, and the chasm that exists between the two in a post-meteoric world. The album includes previously released singles “Half-Life,” “New Joy,” and “Voyager,” and features notable collaborators such as BADBADNOTGOOD’s Alex Sowinski aka Group Climate, singer-songwriter Chocolate Genius, Inc., violinist Astrid Sonne, and cellist/Slauson Malone 1 touring member Nicky Wetherell.
Co-produced by Andrew Lappin, EXCELSIOR is also a multi-disciplinary masterclass from Marsalis, who plays a multitude of instruments (over 22 different ones to be exact), conceives and directs music videos, and immerses listeners in a unique sonic journey like his JMAX auditory experience in LA this evening.
Slauson Malone 1 will kick off a solo headlining tour in the US next week in support of the new album, picking up where he left off after a run of dates on the West Coast alongside King Krule last month. Afterward, he will travel across the pond for a slate of European headline and festival tour dates. Tickets are available for purchase here.
The word “excelsior” embodies perpetual ascent. Slauson Malone 1 envisions it as a metaphorical sword, one that in someone’s possession incessantly grows until it cleaves the Earth in a grand finale. That metaphor becomes his lens to explore all facets of masculinity with a newfound clarity, as he interrogates his own lived experiences through songs and movements across the album inspired by everything from Grammy award-winning composer Wendy Carlos, to the similarities between falling out of love and a nuclear half-life. EXCELSIOR takes the form of a collection of personal essays, with vignettes that intertwine and stand-alone, alone but ultimately serve the purpose of forming Slauson Malone 1’s most personal and enthralling musical work to date.
