A true trendsetter, Zaytoven proved integral to the sonic architecture of the Atlanta scene with which he stands synonymous. His influence can easily be felt in nearly every corner of hip-hop and R&B. 2011 saw him win his first GRAMMY® for co-producing and writing “Papers” on Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond. Among countless multiplatinum productions for the likes of Gucci Mane and Migos, he teamed up with Future for seminal 2015 collaborative mixtape, Beast Mode. Everybody from Drake and Nicki Minaj to Rick Ross and Lil Yachty has sought him out.

Kobalt Signs Childish Gambino

Kobalt, a music and technology company built for artists, songwriters, publishers and labels as an alternative to the traditional music business model, announced that it has signed Grammy award winning, actor, comedian, writer, director, producer, singer, songwriter, rapper, and DJ, Donald Glover, a.k.a., Childish Gambino. The worldwide agreement includes publishing administration, including global synch and creative support services, for all of Childish Gambino’s future songs after the Awaken, My Love! album. In addition, Kobalt has signed Wolf + Rothstein, Glover’s musical teams of collective songwriters and artists for publishing administration, global synch and creative support services.

Said Kobalt Music SVP, Creative, Al McLean, of the deal, “Donald is one of those rare multi-talented artists who can do it all. It’s an honor to sign Donald and Wolf + Rothstein Collective to the Kobalt family.”

Emmy-, Golden Globe-, and Grammy-winning actor, writer, comedian, DJ, and rapper Donald Glover broke into pop culture mainstream first on the hit TV sitcom Community after serving on the writing staff of both The Daily Show and 30 Rock. In August 2011, he signed to Glassnote Records under his rap moniker Childish Gambino and has since released two albums. Glover also currently stars in the FX series Atlanta, which he also created and occasionally directs.

Operating out of Temple Studios in Los Angeles, Wolf + Rothstein is the creative agency comprised of Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Donald Glover, Wolf Taylor, and Fam Rothstein, all whom worked with the band that helped compose the critically acclaimed Awaken My Love! Released December 2, 2017, Awaken My Love! and the chart-topping hit single “Redbone” are nominated for five Grammy Awards: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Traditional R&B Performance (winner), Best R&B Song, and Best Urban Contemporary Album. Childish Gambino is set to perform on Saturday Night Live on May 5, 2018.

“Wolf and Rothstein is excited to partner with Kobalt for publishing,” said Wolf Taylor of Wolf + Rothstein. “We’re looking forward to growing the roster together.”

Kanye West released new song defending his praise For Trump ‘Ye vs. the People’

It’s been at least several hours since we’ve written about Kanye West in this 17th week of the Year of Our Lord 2018, which means there is another development in the Yeezus-turned-#MAGA hat-loving-Trump-supporter saga to dissect.

This time, the rapper-mogul-cultural provocateur dropped “Ye vs. the People,” his second song to be released since he began tweeting enthusiastically in support of President Trump last week, sending both his longtime fans and detractors into a frenzy.

The track was played for the first time Friday night on Power 106, a Los Angeles hip-hop radio station, and features Kanye and the rapper T.I. engaged in a back-and-forth political debate. Presumably, T.I. represents “the People” as he answers “Ye,” who puts to verse more or less what he had been tweeting about for the last several days. (It’s unclear what the Power 106 DJs, who periodically shout and blow air horns over the track, are supposed to represent.)

Kanye opens with a nod to his onetime support of President Barack Obama and a reference to his own rumored presidential ambitions:

I know Obama was Heaven-sent/ But ever since Trump won, it proved that I could be president

T.I. responds:

Yeah you can, at what cost, though? Don’t that go against the teachings that Ye taught for?

The two battle it out, couplet by couplet, touching on everything from police brutality to Kanye’s recent flaunting of his signature red “Make America Great Again” cap, autographed by Trump. Throughout, there are enough open-ended questions (“Is it better if I rap about crack? Huh? ‘Cause it’s cultural?”) to make Socrates proud.

“You just readin’ the headlines, you don’t see the fine print/ You on some choosin’-side s—, I’m on some unified s—,” Kanye raps.

T.I. responds: “It’s bigger than your selfish agenda/ If you election ain’t gon’ stop police from murderin’ n—-s.”

Kanye: “Bruh, I never ever stopped fightin’ for the people/ Actually wearin’ the hat’ll show people that we equal.”

The lyrics eventually move on from couplets to longer verses in which each rapper makes his case. Much as he had done in a text debate with John Legend, Kanye once again defended himself by saying he was simply engaging in “free thought” and encouraging “new ideas,” while T.I. encouraged him to reconsider, given his influence.

YE:

I feel an obligation to show people new ideas
And if you wanna hear ’em, there go two right here

Make America Great Again had a negative reception

I took it, wore it, rocked it, gave it a new direction

Added empathy, care and love and affection

And y’all simply questionin’ my methods

T.I.:

What you willin’ to lose for the point to be proved?

This shit is stubborn, selfish, bullheaded, even for you

You wore a dusty-a– hat to represent the same views

As white supremacy, man, we expect better from you

Not just to be let down when we depend on you, homie

That’s why it’s important to know what direction you’re goin’ now

To clear up any confusion, “Ye vs. the People” is not the same as “Lift Yourself,” a track Kanye had dropped hours earlier that was seen as a coded response to Hot 97 radio station DJ Ebro Darden, a longtime friend of West’s who said he had called the rapper and tried to intervene in the midst of his bizarre tweetstorms last week.

Confused? No matter. All you need to know is that the upbeat ditty “Lift Yourself” included such head-scratching lyrics as:

Poopy-di scoop

Scoop-diddy-whoop

Whoop-di-scoop-di-poop

Poop-di-scoopty

Scoopty-whoop

Whoopity-scoop, whoop-poop

Poop-Diddy, whoop-scoop

Poop, poop

Scoop-diddy-whoop

Whoop-diddy-scoop

Whoop-diddy-scoop, poop

Lil Wayne stars in new Bumbu commercial!

Lil Wayne stars in a hilarious new commercial for Bumbu, a premium craft rum from Barbados.

It’s Wayne’s first major commercial since 2016, when his appearances in unorthodox ads for Apartments.com and Samsung went viral.

The Bumbu ad sees Lil Wayne partying with both beautiful women and goats – a visual pun on G.O.A.T., or “Greatest of All Time” – a moniker frequently used for the multi-platinum selling Wayne. The party kicks into high gear when Wayne asks someone to “pass the Bumbu,” which as the ad tells us, is the G.O.A.T. among the world’s best rums.

“Bumbu is a totally different kind of drink,” says Lil Wayne. “I fell in love with the bottle and the taste the first time I tried it. Now it’s Bumbu everywhere – in the studio, parties, the VIP. All my people are on this Bumbu now.”

Lil Wayne sports a “Bumbu Krewe” jacket – championing his elite “krewe” of rappers and tastemakers who drink and support Bumbu, a dark rum dramatically packaged in a stout glass bottle with an oversized cork and gleaming metal “X” icon.

The commercial is directed by Eif Rivera, whose resume of music videos includes Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent, Nas, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne. It was written in-house by Bumbu’s creative team.

Brett Berish, CEO of Sovereign Brands, owner of Bumbu, says: “Bumbu is a small-batch, limited production rum and we’ve been fortunate to have more demand than supply since it was first released. Lil Wayne was one of the first people to see it and became one of our earliest supporters. As Bumbu has grown and we’ve been able to bring it to new places around the world, making a video with Wayne was a fun and easy choice for us. It’s a perfect way to kick off our first-ever marketing campaign for this wonderful brand.”

Adds Wayne, “Bumbu listens to the streets. You have to. Like my businesses, there’s no outside agency speaking for Bumbu. This was a raw idea that made us laugh out loud. We had fun doing it. And that’s really what separates Bumbu as an independent company….probably why we get along so well!”

About Idris Elba:

A passionate and dynamic performer, and clearly – man of many talents – Idris Elba perfected his skills on the wheels of steel long before finding fame on the big screen. But from spinning surprise sets in East London clubs, his career as a DJ has, much like his acting path, skyrocketed the Londoner to stardom. Enjoying a stellar year in 2017, with sets at the likes of Snowbombing, Glastonbury, Creamfields, and Elrow London; where he shared a stage with heavyweights MK & Hot Since 82, Idris further enhanced his growing reputation with performances at LA Sound with Skream, and New York’s legendary Output venue, with Seth Troxler. An ever-popular figure across the Balearic island, Idris was a resident at Hi Ibiza across the summer season, performing with the Mambo Brothers, and even finding time in his hectic schedule to rock the decks of Pacha with Bob Sinclar. A talented producer, as well as remixer, the British DJ’s mix of ‘Circles’ (released on his own 7Wallace label), was met with acclaim across the industry, and precedes the upcoming Brett Gould EP on 7Wallace. Kickstarting 2018 in a similar vein of form, Idris performed at legendary producer Shy FX’s ‘Cul.ture’ residency, having previously remixed Shy’s ‘Chocolate’ under his Driis moniker; with the record rapidly climbing the ranks as one of 2017’s most heavily supported tracks thanks to his two dynamic interpretations of the original in the form of the Driis 7 Wallace Mix, and the Driis Sugar Zaddy Mix. Taking his talents across the globe in 2018, Idris continues to cement his reputation as one of dance music’s most in-demand names, with sets already scheduled at the likes of Bristol’s esteemed Motion venue, Forbidden Fruit in Dublin, SW4, and July juggernaut, Tomorrowland, as well as a special residency in Ibiza for the upcoming season.

Drake’s ‘Nice For What’ Drops To No. 2 Behind Calvin Harris And Dua Lipa’s New U.K. No. 1

Written By | Hugh McIntyre

It didn’t take very long for EDM Cash King Calvin Harris and pop singer on the rise Dua Lipa to take their new single “One Kiss” all the way to No. 1 in their home country, as it only debuted at No. 3 in its first of two frames on the songs chart across the pond. The forward movement the two chart-toppers are currently enjoying has pushed another major player off the throne just as he arrived.

Drake owned the ranking last frame with his most recent release “Nice For What,” which was immediately powerful enough to debut at the top of the ranking without issue. In doing so, the catchy hip-hop cut became the rapper’s second leader of 2018, but it’s clear that “Nice” won’t rule for nearly as long as his previous champion “God’s Plan,” as it has already been knocked out of the way in favor of something a bit poppier.

Also down this week is “Freaky Friday,” the silly single from comedian and musician Lil Dicky and Chris Brown. The track bolted to No. 1 earlier this month, where it also held court for just one spin before Drake’s “Nice For What” snatched the crown. That cut comes in just ahead of George Ezra’s “Paradise” at No. 4, which is down two slots from its No. 2 peak, which now stands as the singer-songwriter’s career-high.

Rounding out the top five is Rudimental’s “These Days,” which features Macklemore, Jess Glynne and newcomer Dan Caplen. That song was forced to wait for a record-tying seven frames in the passenger seat before it finally made it to the summit, granting every artist another leader on the tally (with Glynne making history by grabbing a sixth No. 1 hit).

The lower half of the top 10 in the U.K. this week is filled by the following popular releases: Marshmello and Anne-Marie’s “Friends” at No. 6, Sigala and Paloma Faith’s new collaboration “Lullaby” at No. 7 (a new high point for the track), Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still” at No. 8, Post Malone and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Psycho” at No. 9 and finally Keala Settle’s “This Is Me,” taken from The Greatest Showman soundtrack, in last place.

Sends Some Subliminal Shots On “KOD” Outro “1985”

Written By | Kevin Goddard

It’s here folks. J. Cole’s KOD album has finally arrived. The 12-track project, which stands for “Kill Our Demons,” “Kids on Drugs,” and “King Overdosed,“ serves as the first project from Cole since 2016’s 4 Your Eyez Only album. It also follows his usual format of no features too, unless you count his alter-ego kiLL Edward who appears on the two records “The Cut Off” & “Friends.”

Looking to highlight one of the many dope new records, here goes the much-talked about outro “1985,” which we’ve been hearing about from fans at his listening session this week. Not only does the song title serve as the year J. Cole was born, but it also finds the North Carolina emcee subliminally dissing an anonymous rapper, which fans believe could be Lil Pump, after the Florida rapper said “fuck J Cole” last year.

In addition, the song also serves as an end to the story of KOD, and the beginning to his next speculated album; possibly called “The Fall Off.”

Take a listen to the lyrical onslaught and let us know what you think. Record & album available now on iTunes.

Quotable Lyrics:

1985, I arrived

33 years, damn, I’m grateful I survived

We wasn’t s’posed to get past 25

Jokes on you motherfucker, we alive

All these niggas popping now is young

Everybody say the music that they make is dumb

I remember I was 18

Money, pussy, parties, I was on the same thing

Kelly Clarkson to Host the 2018 Billboard Music Awards

Written By | Katie Atkinson

After 15-plus years on Billboard‘s charts, Kelly Clarkson will put her hitmaking skills to work as host of the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, NBC announced Tuesday (April 17).

“To prepare for hosting the Billboard Music Awards, I already have 20 costume changes planned,” Clarkson said in a press release announcing the gig. “I will be flying in like my girl P!nk, and calling Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman for jokes. Well, or I’m just gonna show up and celebrate my favorite artists and get to know a few more. Yeah, maybe I’ll go with that plan.”

Currently in her first season as a coach on NBC’s The Voice, Clarkson is the perfect pick to host the BBMAs’ first year on NBC. Clarkson has notched 27 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart so far, including 11 top 10s — three of which reached No. 1 (“A Moment Like This,” “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Stronger [What Doesn’t Kill You]”). She’s also claimed 10 entries on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and among them are three No. 1s. Her most recent release, 2017’s Meaning of Life, bowed at No. 2 and launched a pair of top 20 hits on the Adult Pop Songs chart with “Love So Soft” and “I Don’t Think About You.” This past November, the inaugural American Idol champ accepted the Powerhouse prize at the Billboard Women in Music Awards.

“Kelly Clarkson has long been a Billboard chart phenomenon and has a first-hand understanding of what matters most in music today,” said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment. “Her enthusiasm for all genres of music and her innate sense of humor will make for a truly memorable night.”

The nominees for the 2018 Billboard Music Awards were announced Tuesday, and Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars lead the way with 15 BBMA nominations apiece. All three are up for top artist, also competing against Drake (nine noms total) and Taylor Swift (five noms) in that field. Nominees for the BBMAs are selected through a number of factors, including key interactions with music fans, album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement, as tracked by Billboard and its data partners over a 12-month period.

The 2018 Billboard Music Awards will broadcast live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 20, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC. The three-hour event — produced by dick clark productions — will commemorate 60 years of Billboard charts.
