Christina Aguilera on The Voice: ‘It’s not about music, but good TV’

Christina Aguilera unleashed a brand new song and video yesterday, ‘Accelerate‘ featuring Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz

The ‘Beautiful‘ star also announced that her upcoming album, ‘Liberation‘ will be out in June.

One thing she won’t be announcing is a return to ‘The Voice‘.

Speaking to Billboard, the ‘Burlesque’ star said: “It became something that I didn’t feel was what I had signed up for in season one.

“You realize it’s not about music. It’s about making good TV moments and massaging a story.

“I didn’t get into this business to be a television show host and to be given all these [rules]. Especially as a female: You can’t wear this, can’t say that. I would find myself on that show desperately trying to express myself through clothing or makeup or hair. It was my only kind of outlet.”

Instead she’s keen to return to performing in front of her fans. The 37-year-old said: “When I’m onstage, there’s not a bigger high, when I’m in connection with my voice and my heart and my soul.

“But at the end, I want to wipe it all off, get in my sweatpants, make silly noises with my kids and have someone comfort and cuddle me.”

Liberation is out June 15. Accelerate feat. Ty Dolla $ign & 2 Chainz along with the stunning music video, directed by Zoey Grossman is out now (watch below).

Last week Aguilera took part in The Late Late Show with James Corden’s ‘Carpool Karaoke’ (watch below).

Meek Mill granted bail

Written By | Deena Zaru

Meek Mill will soon leave prison.

After spending nearly five months in jail following a controversial November ruling, the Philadelphia rapper, who received a sentence of two to four years in prison for violating probation, was granted bail on Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

“I’d like to thank God, my family, my friends, my attorneys, my team at Roc Nation including JAY-Z, Desiree Perez, my good friend Michael Rubin, my fans, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time,” the rapper, whose full name is Robert Rihmeek Williams, said in a statement obtained by CNN. “While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive. To the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice — not only for my case, but for others that have been wrongfully jailed due to police misconduct.”

Mill received a two-to-four year prison sentence in November for violating probation on a 2008 gun and drug case. (He was arrested after being involved in a fight and arrested again for popping wheelies on a dirt bike.) Judge Genece Brinkley cited a failed drug test and the rapper’s noncompliance with a court order restricting his travel in her sentencing order.

Earlier this month, the Philadelphia district attorney’s office recommended a new trial for Mill. But after a judge denied Mill bail, his plea was moved to the state’s Supreme Court.

The case has sparked outrage from criminal justice reform activists. Mill received widespread support from notable artists and athletes, including Colin Kapernick, rappers T.I. and Rick Ross, New England Patirots owner Robert Kraft, comedian Kevin Hart and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin.

Rubin told CNN he hopes to pick up Mill from prison on Tuesday evening.

Developing story…

“Tu Tu & More” defies the norm

Written By | Bianca Theodore

In Atlanta Ballet 2’s recent show “Tu Tu & More,” the word “more” is a deceiving wink. Even the word ballet fails to encompass its rich artistry and wildly exhilarating nature.

However, the “more” is also fitting, as it is more of an experience than a simple recital.

Unlike most ballets, the two intermissions do not separate acts of the same show. Rather, all three acts (Tu Tu, blink, and Minus 16) are so diverse they may as well be entirely different performances. According to the program, each of these acts are designed to “display the range of human experience” from “strikingly different points of view.”

And striking it certainly is, to say the least.

The first installment, Tu Tu, acts as the traditional leg of the show. Backed by Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, the ballerinas are a physical embodiment of its lush melody, moving fluidly to the delicate piano riffs and runs. The dancers themselves were a study in classic technique, equally controlled and poised during various jumps, turns, and elaborate footwork. Largely a partner effort, the couples moved in near perfect synchronicity and harmony, acting as bodily extensions of one another.

Then came blink, choreographer Tara Lee’s brand new piece that would be premiered that opening night. In a short cameo, Lee graced the Cobb Energy screen to explain that the piece was inspired by stars, and the energy they exchange. The seven dancers were arranged to mimic constellations, but Lee’s true choreographic intent was to mimic the energy humans exchange everyday. Punctuated by “curving lines, free torsos, and punches of the extremities”, the choreography crackled with the electricity of brief encounters and fleeting moments.

Last, but surely not least, was Minus 16. The act had an unsuspecting beginning, a lone dancer freestyling on an empty stage to an audience still milling around during intermission. The lights were on and the curtain was drawn, but what began as a supposed sideshow quickly captured everyone’s attention. Eventually, the lone dancer was joined by dozens of others, all clad in a drab gray suit with a black top hat. The music was jarring, a peculiar score that featured haunting chants, cha-cha, techno, and mambo. The choreography could best be described as random on purpose; a seemingly discordant mixture of everything from tango to freestyle.

But the highlight of the three acts was Minus 16’s end, which found the dancers in the crowd, holding out an innocuous hand to shocked audience members. To their surprise and our delight, they were bought on stage with no preamble or instructions; just left to tango with the best of them.

At its crescendo, a woman from the crowd stood under a spotlight in the middle of the stage, hands up in victory to the sound of the audience’s standing ovation.

That moment is the more in “Tu Tu & More”; the element of surprise, of thrill, and the reminder that the more is what makes life worth living.

Pink’s Badass Guide to Conquering Life, Love & Everything in Between

Written By | Diana Pearl

When Pink fell ill just before her Montreal concert, she knew she needed to do what was best for her: Postpone the event. “Our entire family has been battling this awful virus/flu for two weeks now, and I have battled my way through these shows because postponing sucks,” she wrote on Twitter, apologizing to her fans. “I’m really sorry and know that I have done everything I could to avoid this.” Luckily, her fans understood: Sometimes, self care is necessary.

To that same point, just as important as knowing when to bow out is knowing when to keep going. When Pink fell ill before the 2018 Super Bowl, she still managed to perform — and received a standing ovation. “I am beyond proud of this woman,” husband Carey Hart wrote on Instagram following her performance. “The roller coaster that she went through this last week with getting sick and losing her voice would have broke any ordinary person.”

When you’re a celeb, there’s no shame in using your star power to treat those you love the most. And for Pink, that came in the form of arranging a meeting between her daughter, Willow, and Willow’s favorite singer, Rihanna. “Willz has been a fan of @badgalriri for a long time, and mama got an intro for her,” Pink wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the trio at the Grammys. “Major mom points tonight.”

Pink is always ready to dole out some realness, and that’s something people love about her. One mom came up to tell her that in the grocery store — and the two even shed a tear together. “A really sweet Mama came up 2me tonight at the grocery store and told me some nice words about how she gets strength from my parenting cause I’m not afraid to f— up in public,” Pink wrote on Twitter. “We cried together. It’s so hard.” She used the moment to remind that woman, as well as the rest of her fans, that sometimes, you need to cut yourself some slack. She added: “I wish us mamas could give ourselves and each other a break.”

Willow may only be 6 years old, but she’s already asking questions about boys and dating — and Pink is sure to steer her on a path of self-respect when it comes to relationships. “They have to kind, respectful. They have to be chivalrous, they have to be good to their moms,” Pink told Cosmopolitan of what advice she gave to her daughter. “They have to be good looking, they have to be funny.”

Pink has never been one to blend in with the crowd, and she encourages Willow to do the same. “[A] very important thing I tell my daughter is it’s very fun to be weird and it’s very boring to be normal,” Pink told Cosmopolitan. “I have a rule with Willow that we don’t say mean things and we don’t say things we don’t mean.”

Good luck to those trying to stir up drama in Pink’s life — especially where there is none. Twitter speculated that there was a feud between her and Christina Aguilera after viewers thought they saw Pink cringing during Aguilera’s Whitney Houston tribute performance. But it didn’t take Pink long to clap back at these rumor-spreaders, tweeting: “Waking up to see a newly created riff between myself and another incredible woman, Christina, who took on an incredible feat, who I support fully, makes me so sad. You all perpetuate keeping women apart b/c you’re afraid of the power we have when we get together.”

Pink doesn’t lie — even when the truth is a little messy. She got candid about her relationship with husband Carey Hart in an interview with The Guardian, confessing that there are times when she doesn’t like him at all. “There are moments where I look at [Hart] and he is the most thoughtful, logical, constant … he’s like a rock. He’s a good man. He’s a good dad. He’s just the kind of dad I thought he’d be and then some,” she said. “And then I’ll look at him and go: ‘I’ve never liked you. There’s nothing I like about you. We have nothing in common. I don’t like any of the s— you like. I don’t ever wanna see you again.”

Kelly Clarkson to Host the 2018 Billboard Music Awards

Written By | Katie Atkinson

After 15-plus years on Billboard‘s charts, Kelly Clarkson will put her hitmaking skills to work as host of the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, NBC announced Tuesday (April 17).

“To prepare for hosting the Billboard Music Awards, I already have 20 costume changes planned,” Clarkson said in a press release announcing the gig. “I will be flying in like my girl P!nk, and calling Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman for jokes. Well, or I’m just gonna show up and celebrate my favorite artists and get to know a few more. Yeah, maybe I’ll go with that plan.”

Currently in her first season as a coach on NBC’s The Voice, Clarkson is the perfect pick to host the BBMAs’ first year on NBC. Clarkson has notched 27 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart so far, including 11 top 10s — three of which reached No. 1 (“A Moment Like This,” “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Stronger [What Doesn’t Kill You]”). She’s also claimed 10 entries on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and among them are three No. 1s. Her most recent release, 2017’s Meaning of Life, bowed at No. 2 and launched a pair of top 20 hits on the Adult Pop Songs chart with “Love So Soft” and “I Don’t Think About You.” This past November, the inaugural American Idol champ accepted the Powerhouse prize at the Billboard Women in Music Awards.

“Kelly Clarkson has long been a Billboard chart phenomenon and has a first-hand understanding of what matters most in music today,” said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment. “Her enthusiasm for all genres of music and her innate sense of humor will make for a truly memorable night.”

The nominees for the 2018 Billboard Music Awards were announced Tuesday, and Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars lead the way with 15 BBMA nominations apiece. All three are up for top artist, also competing against Drake (nine noms total) and Taylor Swift (five noms) in that field. Nominees for the BBMAs are selected through a number of factors, including key interactions with music fans, album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement, as tracked by Billboard and its data partners over a 12-month period.

The 2018 Billboard Music Awards will broadcast live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 20, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC. The three-hour event — produced by dick clark productions — will commemorate 60 years of Billboard charts.

Migos Transcend The Trap On ‘Culture II’ Album

Written By | Rodney Carmichael

There’s a line in “Culture National Anthem,” the surprisingly chill closer on Migos’ new album Culture II, that sums up how much has changed for the group in a year’s time: “Believe me when I say we create our own sound,” the trio’s leader Quavo croons in a melodic wisp. “I know you see it now, what they be screaming ’bout.”

After years of being dismissed as a mumble rap laughingstock while steadily racking up certified street hits, Migos broke through to the mainstream in 2017 with the Donald Glover-approved hit, “Bad and Boujee.” The song reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by the No. 1 debut of Culture on the Billboard 200 album chart last January. They haven’t looked back since.

One year later, they’re back with the follow up, Culture II, which accomplishes the rare feat of sustaining itself over 24 tracksAgainst all odds, they’ve found ways to improve on their signature sound. Some of the best cuts on the album are the non-trap joints, where they forsake the 808-heavy sound for something more musical or melodic — like the club bounce on “Gang Gang,” the saxophone riffs on “Too Playa” or the laid-back grooves on “Made Men.”

It amounts to a more cultured sounding Migos on Culture II. While the rest of the industry continues to mimic and nitpick their sound, Quavo, Offset and Takeoff show they aren’t stuck on one note.

The album finds the trendsetters drawing sounds from a wider pool of elite producers including Pharrell, Mike Dean and Kanye West, who contribute tracks alongside such trap traditionalists as Zaytoven, Metro Boomin and Cardo Got Wings. Huncho himself, aka Quavo, even produced a song.

At this stage in their career, Migos have the luxury to pick and choose when it comes to collaborators. The proof is in the trim, top-notch list of featured artists. 21 Savage appears on “BBO,” while trap-father Gucci Mane comes through for “CC.” The Cardi B and Nicki Minaj-assisted “MotorSport” — a single that paired the ladies together for the first time — is positioned later in the tracklist to give any fatigued listener a second wind. Post Malone makes an appearance on “Notice Me” and 2 Chainz cleans up for “Too Playa.” Travis Scott, Ty Dolla $ign and Big Sean also show up for “White Sand.” And the Drake-assisted “Walk It Talk It,” is a real highlight.

But it’s clear this is the Migos’ show. From these new sounds, the sun won’t set on their reign in 2018.
