Kobalt Signs Childish Gambino

Kobalt, a music and technology company built for artists, songwriters, publishers and labels as an alternative to the traditional music business model, announced that it has signed Grammy award winning, actor, comedian, writer, director, producer, singer, songwriter, rapper, and DJ, Donald Glover, a.k.a., Childish Gambino. The worldwide agreement includes publishing administration, including global synch and creative support services, for all of Childish Gambino’s future songs after the Awaken, My Love! album. In addition, Kobalt has signed Wolf + Rothstein, Glover’s musical teams of collective songwriters and artists for publishing administration, global synch and creative support services.

Said Kobalt Music SVP, Creative, Al McLean, of the deal, “Donald is one of those rare multi-talented artists who can do it all. It’s an honor to sign Donald and Wolf + Rothstein Collective to the Kobalt family.”

Emmy-, Golden Globe-, and Grammy-winning actor, writer, comedian, DJ, and rapper Donald Glover broke into pop culture mainstream first on the hit TV sitcom Community after serving on the writing staff of both The Daily Show and 30 Rock. In August 2011, he signed to Glassnote Records under his rap moniker Childish Gambino and has since released two albums. Glover also currently stars in the FX series Atlanta, which he also created and occasionally directs.

Operating out of Temple Studios in Los Angeles, Wolf + Rothstein is the creative agency comprised of Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Donald Glover, Wolf Taylor, and Fam Rothstein, all whom worked with the band that helped compose the critically acclaimed Awaken My Love! Released December 2, 2017, Awaken My Love! and the chart-topping hit single “Redbone” are nominated for five Grammy Awards: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Traditional R&B Performance (winner), Best R&B Song, and Best Urban Contemporary Album. Childish Gambino is set to perform on Saturday Night Live on May 5, 2018.

“Wolf and Rothstein is excited to partner with Kobalt for publishing,” said Wolf Taylor of Wolf + Rothstein. “We’re looking forward to growing the roster together.”

You can make yourself a fancy cup of tea in this concept Mercedes Maybach SUV

The car comes with a bespoke tea set and a heated tray

Written By |

The 2018 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition is currently running in China, and Mercedes has unveiled a new concept high-end luxury SUV at the event. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury SUV features a spacious interior, and there’s even a bespoke tea set hidden in the car’s console. The car is sleek, cherry red, and aimed at the Chinese market, where the color red symbolizes happiness, luck, and joy.

The model is conceived as being fully electric, with all-wheel drive and four seats (one driver and three passengers). Mercedes says the system allows a charging capacity of up to 350kW, and with five minutes of charging, the car will have an additional range of 62 miles (100km). It can be charged by cable or through induction.

SUV

The seats are positioned significantly higher than in other SUVs. Mercedes said that came from a desire of many of its customers for a “feeling of protection and security.” The white seats are made from nappa leather, and the interior accents are rose gold. The exterior front plate also features the chrome-plated radiator grilles that were first debuted on the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 in 2016.

The vehicle has double 12.3-inch displays for the driver, a touchscreen and touchpad on the center console, and touch control buttons on the steering wheel. There is also the capability for voice control, and Mercedes says the system adjusts to the user’s voice and adapts to new words used.

The company says the design mixes influences from the Western and Far Eastern hemispheres. It also incorporates Chinese design elements like ebony, which Mercedes says is known as “Magic Wood” often used in Chinese furniture. The tea set, which includes a teapot and cups, is made of china, and the sculpted wooden tray is made of ebony. The console is equipped with an integrated heated tray so you can happily drink tea without worrying about where to boil water. You can access the tea set by pressing a button which electronically reveals it. Mercedes says there are also a variety of teas available and “relaxation programs” for passengers sitting in the back.

According to Mercedes, the car is smart enough to “act with anticipation” and can play music to match your current mood and plan routes according to your appointments. The car also features Mercedes’ Energizing Control, a wellness tool that systematically controls the vehicle’s climate control system and seats to optimize comfort for the driver and passengers. The system controls how cool or warm the car is, fragrances released, music played, and heating, ventilation, and massage functions in the seats.

The concept car is the definition of extra. But if you have the money, why not enjoy life and tea while driving? There’s no indication yet of when these features might make it into a real vehicle, though.

2019 Jeep Wrangler lands with new hybrid engine and big tech boost

Written By | Sam Sheehan

New SUV is due to land on British shores in 2019 with its first electrified powertrain option

Jeep has pulled the covers off its latest Wrangler, which is due in Britain by 2019 with a new mild hybrid powertrain for the first time.

The American SUV, on show at the Atlanta motor show, has been given a big technical boost to bring it up to date, but designers have been sure to retain the familiar look of its forebears, which stretch back to 1986.

It’s offered in two- and four-door guises in Sport, Sport S, Sahara (exclusive to the four-door) and Rubicon trim. The model gets new LED lighting and is available with more open-air options, including one that enables the doors and roof to be removed.

Inside, Jeep’s Uconnect infotainment technology features within a centrally mounted touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Base cars get a 5.0in screen, but 7.0in and 8.4in versions are available in higher models. A 7.0in digital LED instrument cluster display is also available; base cars make do with a 3.5in screen between the dials.

The car, due on American roads first at the start of next year, is the first Wrangler to get a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that uses a twin-scroll turbocharger and new eTorque technology.

This mild hybrid system outputs a maximum of 270bhp and 295lb ft of torque, while also enabling significant improvements to efficiency. Stop/start technology is included, and the engine can switch off when the car is coasting.

The Wrangler is also offered with a 3.6-litre petrol engine with 285bhp and 260lb ft of torque, while a 3.0-litre diesel that produces 260bhp and 442lb ft will be added to the range from 2019. Both units use start/stop technology.

As standard, the Wrangler sends torque through a six-speed manual gearbox, but an eight-speed automatic is also on offer. Drive is channelled to all four wheels, with low-ratio 4:1 locking differentials available (they’re standard on Rubicon cars).

Like its predecessors, the new Wrangler is based on a body-on-frame chassis design. It features five-link suspension, while the roll centre height has been raised and spring rates retuned to boost the car’s off-road abilities and improve ride quality.

Jeep claims that the car can wade through water up to 760mm deep, just 40mm short of what the larger Range Rover Sport can manage, and drive up inclines with a 44 degree approach and a departure angle of 37 degrees. The car’s ground clearance is 277mm.

Alongside its off-road hardware, the new car gets a raft of new safety tech, with 75 active and passive systems available. These include blind spot monitoring, electronic roll mitigation and rear-cross path detection technology.

When the new Wrangler arrives in the UK, it will likely do so in higher numbers than before. The UK volume of the current Wrangler, which is still available to buy in Britain, is low but consistently stable, with 322 units delivered last year. Jeep UK is understood to be pushing for a boost in available numbers when the next-generation Wrangler arrives following requests from prospective customers for more cars.

Munich. From 2001 to 2004, the international BMW Motorrad BoxerCup thrilled spectators at the MotoGPTM, the Superbike World Championship & ca. Now, BMW Motorrad is bringing the Boxer engine back to motorsport. The new BMW Motorrad BoxerCup starts in spring 2018. All riders race on identical BMW R nineT Racer bikes that have been modified for racing. The season opener will be held on 23rd/24th June 2018 as part of the ADAC Classic at the Sachsenring (GER). The other races take place as part of the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM).

“A level playing field with identical machines meeting style and individuality. We are looking forward to bringing the BMW Motorrad BoxerCup back to life with the BMW R nineT Racer, and to thrilling the crowds at the racetracks with that emotional Boxer engine,” says Henning Putzke, Head of BMW Motorrad Deutschland.

The regulations promise some thrilling action, with victory and defeat being determined solely by the ability and determination of the riders. The riders will be on BMW R nineT Racer sport motorbikes with air/oil-cooled 1,170cc boxer engines, producing 81 kW (110 HP) performance. All the race bikes boast identical modifications, including redesigned front forks and dampers from Wilbers, cylinder head covers, engine spoilers and rear panels from Ilmberger, sports shocks and titanium manifold from Akrapovič, BMW Motorrad ABS with racing software, BREMBO brake pads, the “High End” steering dampers from Müller Präzision, and uniform Metzeler tyres.

All motorbikes will be prepared for competitive racing at the BMW Motorrad Centre in Munich. Side stands, mirrors, number plate holders, indicators and lights were all removed to accommodate the modifications. However, once the season is over the bike can be returned to its original state and be approved for road use.

To ensure that all competitors have the same chance of success, no changes – apart from optical modifications to the paintwork, or the application of stickers or film – are permitted, beyond those made in Munich. All technical components and wear parts are precisely specified and regulated. No tuning is permitted whatsoever.

The starting field for the BMW Motorrad BoxerCup will feature 30 places for the new season. In addition to the regular starters, well-known guest riders will take part in the races on two VIP bikes. Riders over 18 years of age and in possession of a national B license (or higher), or a comparable license from another FIM federation, can apply to take part. Buying one of the BoxerCup special edition BMW R nineT Racers is another precondition for competition. Participants can choose between four different performance packages when making their purchase. The offer includes the basic package, which just includes the bike, and stretches all the way to the VIP package, including transport and storage of the bike, insurance, catering on race weekends and other advantages. BMW Motorrad also enables the race bikes to be rented for the entire 2018 season, as an alternative to purchasing one. Registration is open now using the link below.

The BMW Motorrad BoxerCup season starts on 23rd/24th June at the ADAC Classic at the Sachsenring (GER) and comprises a total of six race events. Round two is scheduled for 7th/8th July in Zolder, Belgium. This is followed by the races at Schleiz (28th/29th July), at the Lausitzring (25th/26th August), and on the legendary TT Circuit in Assen, Netherlands (8th/9th September). The finale will then take place on 29th/30th September at Hockenheim (GER).

Sanmar orders 42 Rolls-Royce thrusters in novel supply agreement

Rolls-Royce has secured an extensive supply order from long-time collaborator Sanmar Shipyards for propulsion and deck equipment for tugboats the Turkish shipyard is building for various customers.

RR 2

The scope of supply includes 42 Rolls-Royce US 205/255 azimuth thrusters for 21 harbour/terminal/escort tugs in the 60, 70 and 80 tonne bollard-pull range and high-pressure hydraulic towing winched for the 80 tonne models. All vessels are based on new designs developed by Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd., exclusively for Sanmar.

“We have delivered 150 azimuth thrusters to Sanmar in a relationship that spans 15-years,” said Andrea Cerutti, Rolls-Royce Vice-President Customer & Sales, South Europe. “In addition to this, we supplied various equipment to milestone projects such as Borgøy, the world’s first LNG-fuelled tugboat, and the 2017 delivered Svitzer Hermod, the world’s first remotely-controlled commercial vessel. This new contract is another significant milestone in the Rolls-Royce-Sanmar partnership.”

Unlike conventional supply agreements signed on a project-by-project basis, Rolls-Royce and Sanmar have entered into a framework agreement whereby Rolls-Royce will supply standard specification products for all the vessels across a two-to-three-year period. The agreement takes into account options on the standard product specification to cover specific demands and operational requirements.

“This new arrangement provides both parties with some significant advantages,” said Gary Nutter, Rolls-Royce Director Customer & Propulsion. “For Rolls-Royce it provides good visibility, allowing us to optimise production. The benefits for the customer are that we can offer shorter lead times, secure production slots and the flexibility to customise the equipment in line with specific requirements. It’s a win-win arrangement for both parties.”

Ali Gurun, Sanmar Projects Director and Member of the Board, added: “The current order book for Sanmar tugs lends itself to this new procurement arrangement. Rather than having to create new supply agreement for each newbuild project, this new arrangement allows to effectively have a constant supply of Rolls-Royce equipment that we can adapt to meet our customers’ requirements. This means we can potentially reduce build time and streamline the building process.”

Sanmar’s new portfolio of tug designs has two new additions, a versatile 25m Tractor tug that incorporates a hull that can be outfitted with 60 to 70tonnes Bollard pull and a 29m ASD tug which can accommodate up to 90 tonnes of Bollard pull.

Sony Debuts Virtual Reality Mapping Technology in Groundbreaking Music Video at SXSW

It’s the first time the tech was used in a music video

Written By | Ann-Marie Alcántara

Sony closed out its week-long activation at South by Southwest with some fluffy clouds, a cash bar, special musical performances and a new type of virtual reality experience.

The second half of Sony’s activation, which ran from March 15-16, concluded with the debut of artist Khalid’s “Young, Dumb and Broke” VR music video. For the first time in a music video, VR projection mapping technology was used. The technique enhances VR with 360-degree “stereoscopic” images, making it possible to display images on objects within the experience. In this case, Khalid’s original video, “Young, Dumb and Broke,” is being projected onto different aspects within the video, like the ocean and planets.

“This idea of using projection mapping inside a virtual world was something that was created through an original Sony interactive entertainment engine,” said Miki Anan, senior manager, entertainment partnerships at Sony.

Visitors who came to Sony’s “Lost in Music” event put on Playstation VR headsets and were first guided through the company’s “acoustic vessel odyssey,” an audio journey with an immersive sound experience. The audio and light show included a whopping 576 speakers, as well as a unique light installation created by digital artists, Kimchi and Chips.

After seeing, hearing and taking plenty of Instagram-worthy photos, guests then entered the “dreamscape” room, where they could watch the new VR video and get some drinks. They were also treated to performances by artists Tinashe, A.CHAL, Leikeli47, Olivia Noelle and, at the end, Khalid himself.

Sony worked with agency Ralph to come up with the creative for the event, using Mission to put the production together.

We wanted to bring together a completely new type of immersive experience to music lovers,” Anan said.

Anyone who owns a Playstation VR headset will be able to download the video come spring.

The first half of Sony’s activation (March 10-13) included the Wow Studio, which showcased different technologies like Aibo, an AI-driven robotic dog that responds to touch and even barks. The studio was taken down after the interactive portion of the festival ended; the space then solely focused on Khalid’s VR experience during the music portion of SXSW.

Sony will wrap its “Lost in Music” campaign at SXSW on March 16 with performances by Noah Cyrus, Cam, Caitlyn Smith, Lo Moon, Morgan Saint and The Accidentals.

The technology Sony debuted was yet another example of brands breaking the mold with unique activations during the festival. As Adweek senior tech editor Lauren Johnson noted, while there have been less activations than in past years, this year’s presented a host of new and unique experiences, including BeautyRest inviting 150 people to sleep on its beds and Grindr editing over 50 Wikipedia pages to add LGBTQ information.

BMW is helping to build the world’s fastest racing drone

It loaned a wind tunnel and expertise to the Drone Racing League (DRL).

BMW is working with the Drone Racing League (DRL) to break the record for the world’s fastest drone set by the DRL itself last year. BMW will loan its technical expertise and wind tunnel at its Aerodynamic Test Center to help the league break the 165.2 mph Guinness world speed record it set with its DRL RacerX drone. The automaker is also bring a DRL race to its BMW Welt exhibition center and museum in Munich, Germany.

The Drone Racing League has grown rapidly, thanks to a deal with ESPN and new, more spectator- and competitor-friendly DRL Racer 3. The new model, used by all pilots to ensure races are strictly a test of pilot skill, is more crash resistant and easier for spectators to follow.

BMW’s linkup with drone racing might seem a bit odd, but the company said drone racing isn’t that far removed from motorsports. “[It] is a very competitive type of racing, characterized by the interplay of extremely high-performance material and digital technology,” said BMW Brand Experience head Jörg Reimann. DRL hinted that the Munich race will happen in BMW’s international automobile museum near Olympiapark.

BENTLEY AND TINA GUO – THE SOUND OF ELECTRIC

  • Bentley announces collaboration with world-renowned cellist Tina Guo
  • Guo composes and performs an original piece for electric cello for new Bentayga Hybrid
  • Guo to make live appearances with Bentley throughout 2018

(Crewe, 15 March 2018) Bentley Motors is today announcing an exciting new partnership with world-renowned cellist, Tina Guo.

Guo recently composed, performed and produced the launch music for the first luxury hybrid vehicle in the world – the Bentayga Hybrid – and will work closely with Bentley throughout 2018 with a schedule of live performances and guest appearances.

Christophe Georges, Director of Marketing for Bentley, comments: “Tina is an extraordinary talent. Through her compositions and performances on her electric cello, Tina has taken the sound of an acoustic cello – a beautiful luxury instrument hand-crafted from the finest materials – and made it contemporary and modern with the addition of electricity. We have achieved the same feat with the new Bentayga Hybrid, and we are excited to be working with her.”

Speaking about the partnership, Guo said: “I’ve always had a passion for cars and Bentley in particular, so to be composing and performing for such an amazing brand is a huge honour for me.

“Last week I was able to take time during a tour of Switzerland to visit the Geneva Motor Show and see the unveil of the Bentayga Hybrid set to my music. It was such a special moment and I’m very excited for the year ahead with Bentley.”

The piece of music composed and performed by Guo reflects the tranquil and refined interior space offered by the Bentayga Hybrid. In pure EV mode, the car makes effortless progress for up to 31 miles (50 km) in silence thanks to the electric drivetrain and provides an oasis of calm in the city and beyond. The Bentayga Hybrid will go on sale later this year as the first step towards a sustainable, electrified future for Bentley.

PACIFIC RIM

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.”  Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld.  But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war.  As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.
