Dehd releases new album ‘Poetry’

Dehd releases their highly anticipated new album Poetry, via Fat Possum Records. Poetry encapsulates the band’s artistic voyage by reflecting a journey as vast and nuanced as the American landscape they traversed while crafting it. Recently, Dehd opened up about their creative process in a Rolling Stone profile, detailing how a simple writing session transformed into an epic road trip, ultimately shaping the essence of the album. This tireless sense of adventure, both internal and external, has become a trademark of Dehd over the years.

For their first stop, they went to frontwoman Emily Kempf’s off-grid Earthship in Taos, New Mexico, where they chopped wood to stay warm and worked until they ran out of daylight. They then travelled north to a borrowed cabin on the Puget Sound where surrounded by chilly waters, time was marked only by the movement of the tides. “Eating, Sleeping, Breathing, Living – our only purpose was to write,” Kempf recalled. This was the first time the band traveled to distinctly notable locations to write and be inspired. Leaving their hometown Chicago proved to be a watershed moment.

They finalized the songs that became Poetryback in snowy Chicago in the warehouse space they’ve called home for nearly a decade. The band tapped Ziyad Asrar of Whitney to co-produce the album alongside Dehd’s own Jason Balla at Palisade Studio, marking the first time the trio has collaborated with anyone outside of the band during the recording process.

On their triumphant fifth album, Dehd transports us to a world steeped in imagery. Rolling Stone lauded the band’s lyrical talent, noting, “Kempf’s and Balla’s lyrics approach matters of the heart and soul with an unvarnished sincerity that’s sweet, silly, and just serious enough.” It’s a world painted in the sunset tones of summer romance and flickering old flames, as showcased in their previously released singles. It’s an otherworldly experience (“Alien“), the gleam of motorcycle chrome (“Mood Ring“), the struggle against self-defeating tendencies (“Light On“), and Monday’s “Dog Days,” it’s the sultry summer evenings and the quest for love.

To celebrate the album’s release, Dehd is doing a series of pop-up shows, with the first one being today in Maria Hernandez Park in Brooklyn, which was announced last night, with more to come! The band will soon set off on a major North American festival circuit, along with radio show performances throughout the summer and a 9-stop headlining tour in Europe. They will then return to North America for an extensive headline tour, which includes a recently announced Brooklyn Steel play in New York City and concludes with two nights at Thalia Hall in their hometown of Chicago. Tickets are available at dehd.horse.
