TCM To Pay Tribute To Musicals In June Programming Special
“Mad About Musicals!”

Network To Also Offer Free Interactive Online Course About the History of the Musical Genre

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will pay homage to the glittering world of Hollywood musicals with Mad About Musicals!, a special month of programming celebrating timeless movie musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ in the Rain and Cabaret. TCM is once again partnering with Ball State University and Canvas to offer a free online multimedia course tied to this programming special about the history of the musical genre and its evolution with cultural and technological shifts. Enrollment is open until June 17 and fans can sign up for the course at musicals.tcm.com.

Movie musicals have been a part of pop culture since films began to talk. Mad About Musicals! will feature more than 90 musicals every Tuesday and Thursday in June, including:

  • The ‘20s – fans discover the development of the genre with the dawn of sound technology in films such as The Broadway Melody (1929) and The Love Parade (1929)
  • The ‘30s –  Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the most-loved musical couple of the 1930s, shine in Top Hat (1935) and the technicolor dream Wizard of Oz (1939) is released
  • The ‘40s – with films like Meet Me In St. Louis (1944) and On the Town (1949), this decade proved to be a love letter to the musical genre
  • The ‘50s – the Hollywood musical hit its sparkling peak with Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
  • The ‘60s – the decade of the Academy Award®-winning musical with My Fair Lady (1964) and Oliver (1968) winning for Best Picture and Barbra Streisand winning Best Actress for Funny Girl (1968)
  • The ’70s – marking the age of musicals based on stage hits with films like Cabaret (1972) and Fiddler on the Roof (1971)

The network’s fourth annual Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) will run concurrently with TCM’s programming and lead participants through the history of the musical. More than 44,000 participants enrolled in TCM’s past three successful MOOCs, all of which generated industry-leading completion rates and very high satisfaction rates, while acting as an on-ramp for new audiences to the TCM brand. The free, month-long multimedia course exploring the musical’s place in cinematic history, features:

  • Course lessons with movie clips from Dr. Vanessa Theme Ament, former Actor’s Equity performer, successful Hollywood Foley artist (Die Hard, Edward Scissorhands) and Endowed Chair of Telecommunications at Ball State University
  • Interviews with guests such as Academy Award-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom, discussing sound in the Hollywood musical, and film scholar Richard Edwards examining the connection between musicals and melodrama
  • Fun and challenging online games to test expertise and create friendly competition
  • Ongoing social conversation with fellow participants on TCM message boards and on social media with #TCMusicals
  • On-air film introductions from Dr. Ament alongside TCM Host Ben Mankiewicz during the first week of June

“At TCM we are constantly looking for ways to create immersive experiences so our fans can engage with us on a deeper level, and our annual online courses tied to an on-air programming special have proved to do just that,” said Jennifer Dorian, General Manager of TCM & FilmStruck and EVP of 360 Brand Strategy for Turner. “This fan experience we create with our partners at Ball State University and Canvas helps take our mission of context and curation to the next level.”

Canvas, the online educational platform for this year’s MOOC, will utilize Arc, a hands-on video platform that turns content into collaboration. It empowers learners to collaborate with peers and interact with content by allowing them to comment and offer feedback within the video timeline.

Yabba-Dabba-Doo!  Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm are back in this quarter-hour animated comedy series, Yabba-Dabba Dinosaurs!  Warner Bros. Animation takes you beyond Bedrock to The Crags, a vast land that is as dangerous and wild as the dinosaurs that inhabit it.

Pebbles Flintstone and Bamm-Bamm Rubble are two best friends, growing up in the prehistoric time when dinosaurs and giant beasts still walked the earth. But as exciting as that sounds, they live in peaceful, quiet old Bedrock, a modern domestic civilization similar to our own (but with stone cars that run on leg-power). That’s why whenever they get the chance, Pebbles, Bamm-Bamm and Dino head to the open wilderness, helping new friends, fighting new enemies and learning about life through their endless crazy adventures.  Back in Bedrock, Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty still enjoy all the familiar quirks and trappings of life as a modern Stone Age family not knowing all the trouble (and fun!) their kids are getting themselves into.

Yabba-Dabba Dinosaurs! is produced by Warner Bros. Animation.   Mark Marek (MAD) and Marly Halpern-Graser (Right Now Kapow) serve as producer with Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) as executive producer.  The series premieres in 2019.

Turner International’s Digital Ventures & Innovation (DV&I) Group and Warner Bros. Digital Networks (WBDN) today announce additional international markets for their premium movie streaming service FilmStruck.

The subscription video on-demand service, which announced its arrival in the international marketplace with its UK launch in February, will expand with bespoke services for France and Spain, offering movie lovers a diverse movie catalogue drawing on the extensive Warner Bros. library and the Criterion Collection library, as well as other global and local content partners.

The collection will be continuously refreshed, providing movie fans with a trusted source of quality films and a simple and engaging way to discover content.

Additionally, and with a strong emphasis on catering to different audiences with carefully chosen bespoke local content, the service offerings for each market reflect expert local curation. The service for France will draw on local content partners Carlotta Films, MK2, RKO and StudioCanal while the service for Spain will team with local content providers Wanda, Caramel and A Contracorriente Films, resulting in a rich mix of local, European and global content.

“Rolling FilmStruck out to these additional markets is a significant next step for us,” said Aksel van der Wal, Executive Vice President, DV&I, Turner International. “France and Spain both have a rich heritage in and love for movies, as well as being rapidly developing SVOD markets, which makes them both exciting markets to tap into with what we believe is a fresh and differentiated offering working with fantastic content partners.”

The expansion of the service into France and Spain comes shortly after DV&I and WBDN announced the appointment of Kerensa Samanidis to the role of General Manager, FilmStruck, International. ‘Archer’ Team Talks ‘Escaping Trump’ Through ‘Danger Island’ Season

Written By | Danielle Turchiano

In its ninth season, the animated “Archer” is delivering a lighter story in “Danger Island” than the recent past.

“The one thing that I would never personally do is set ‘Archer’ in the right now, dealing with real life things. I spend so much time writing ‘Archer’ that I like it to be an escape,” series creator Adam Reed tells Variety.

Last season’s “Dreamland” not only started the long-running comedy’s run on FXX (it originally launched on FX) but also but also a new anthology storytelling format. Gone are the days of telling spy tales that take place part in the field and part in the office. Starting with season 5, the show dove into much more serialized — and stylized — storytelling, first with “Archer: Vice” in the vein of “Miami Vice.” But the anthology format really came alive in the eighth season, when the show launched the characters — and viewers by extension — into the titular character’s subconscious in a season entitled “Dreamland” that saw new settings and new relationship dynamics (Mallory wasn’t even Archer’s mother). Now, season 9 launches “Danger Island,” a season that is set right before World War II on a South Pacific Island full of monkeys, lizards, quicksand, a talking parrot and a Nazi.

“Last season, we loved it, but things got really, really dark, and we wanted to just lighten things up greatly,” executive producer Matt Thompson says of the approach to season 9. “The original starting point was just ‘How do we be lighter?’ We wanted to just tell jokes and be really silly. You’re not only escaping Trump and what’s going on in the news today but also the past baggage from our other seasons.”

Thompson and co-executive producer Casey Willis say they wanted the season to look lighter, too.

“In season 8 we tried to keep everything in that same era of noir feel — all the fashions, the cars, the weapons, even some of the streets and stuff. This season it’s a little looser in regards to how detailed the costumes and the settings and everything [are],” says Willis. “Archer’s airplane is still the correct type of airplane, but monkeys suddenly appear on the island, and there’s a joke about it — ‘Wait, aren’t howler monkeys only in Central and South America?’ And then they kind of blow it off.”

Wanting to focus on crafting an adventure tale, Thompson and Reed talked about “an old school ‘Indiana Jones’ serial” for the season. Entering the story from this angle allowed them to play with new characters for core players like Lana (voiced by Aisha Tyler), Cyril (voiced by Chris Parnell) and Krieger (voiced by Lucky Yates).

Lana and Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) will still have “some sort of love relationship” between them this season, Thompson teases, but they also have very different goals and are not working alongside each other as they have in seasons past. Cyril is a “bloodthirsty, drug-addicted, murderous Nazi,” Thompson adds, while Krieger is the aforementioned talking parrot.

“If we think about this as seasons that are in Archer’s subconscious as he’s dreaming about it, there’s kind of two aspects of Lana,” Willis explains. “One is he loses his cool around [her] and just is like a little sheepish boy because he’s so infatuated with her, but also, there’s always something he’s been worried about because she always ends up double-crossing him or being something that she’s not. That’s something he’s always worried about and that prevents him from having a successful relationship with her in the real ‘Archer’ world.”

While who the characters appear as are very different from one of these subsconscious-set seasons to the next, it is important to the team behind the show that their personalities always fit into the archetypes of who they were this whole time. So while Cyril is a Nazi, he’s still Archer’s antagonist, as he was back when they worked in the spy agency together, Reed points out.

And unlike how the first subsconscious season removed the “rich history” of having Mallory (voiced by Jessica Walter) as Archer’s mother, “Danger Island” returns them to their original dysfunctional dynamic.

“After last season was over we got a comment from one of our amazing actors, Jessica Walter, [who] rightly pointed out to us that she missed the relationship,” Thompson says. “She did it with love, [saying] ‘The relationship is better between these two people if I am his mother and all of the baggage that comes with it. And she was right.”

Pam (voiced by Amber Nash) and Archer’s relationship will also be closely connected this season.

“They’re paired up every episode and you really get to see how they work together as buddies, and I think it’s just a reflection of how much Archer cares about Pam and how well he gets along with her,” Willis says.

“Danger Island” will break the fourth wall from time to time, which is something the show has never done before. Part of the fun of resetting the show was to be able to break some of the rules.

“I would put this season of ‘Danger Island’ as if it’s one giant Barry rule,” Willis says, citing the character of Barry (voiced by Dave Willis), who as a cyborg represents the level of technology that does not yet exist but is still made to be believable within the “Archer” universe. “This island can be defined as ‘Maaaaybe?’ as opposed to ‘That couldn’t be possible.’ We’ve much more embraced our inner Barry.”

CNBC’s Becky Quick, who has been covering Buffett for more than a decade, meets a range of people whose lives have been influenced and changed by Buffett’s example and his teachings. Some are famous, and others unknown, everyday folks, some running small ventures, who feel a connection to one of the wealthiest people on the planet. Quick profiles an NFL superstar planning for life after football, a military veteran who did two tours in Afghanistan, and a young man who attributes his recovery from an opioid addiction in part to Buffett’s principles of ethics and integrity. Quick also visits the Hudson Booksellers at the Omaha airport, whose manager makes 20% of his annual sales during the weekend of the Shareholders Meeting by stocking up on books about, or recommended by, Buffett and his business partner, Charlie Munger.

“Warren Buffett: Investor. Teacher. Icon.” presents an intimate look at Buffett through the eyes of those who follow him closely, as well as from never-before-seen footage of Buffett visiting his old house and neighborhood in Washington, D.C., where he lived as a teenager and cultivated his entrepreneurial spirit, delivering newspapers.
