IMPRINT’s Review | Arrested Development at Mercury Ballroom

IMPRINT Writer| C.Michael Stewart
May 24, 2018 Mercury Ballroom , Louisville , Kentucky—A true pioneer in hip-hop music, Arrested Development performed in Louisville’s Mercury Ballroom to an enthusiastic audience last evening.
Since 1991 the band has raised awareness to of the homeless, racial injustice and consciousness while providing a award winning music including two Grammys.
Considered one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time by VH-1, Speech lead off the show with “Mr. Wendal” which ignited a night of sharing dance and song with their fans who seemed to know every word of the entire set.
1Love followed singing “1 4 the Treble” and the band traded vocals through out the evening backed by lady dancers and backup singers Fareedah and Tasha LaRae who created powerful energy to the show.
Ms. Larae’s strong vocals and Fareedah’s amazing dance energy kept the tempo ay a high level as Speech and 1 Love continued to run through their best loved songs compiled since 1991! “Revolution” and Grammy Award winning song” Tennessee” voted one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was combined into a jam that raised the energy level to its highest peak.
Although guitarist JJ Boogie was not present the music was strong and each of the 13 songs were powerful. Speech seemed to enjoy poking todays rappers with the song” I don’t see you at the club” His reply “ I don’t see you at the Bank!”
Ending the show with Sly and The Family Stones “Everyday People” fit perfectly with the bands message of consciousness.
As the show ended the members of the band showed their appreciation by coming to the stages edge shaking hands ,meeting and thanking fans.
It was an energetic night of uplifting music with a message. A celebration of the genus and vision of this legendary band!

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

It’s been twenty years since a new group called Arrested Development slammed the gangsta dominated world of hip hop with defiant lyrics of hope. Apparently the world was ready for the change as AD became the first ever hip-hop artist to receive the “best new artist” Grammy, (a distinction it still maintains today in that category). In addition, the group also received a Grammy award for “best rap single” for their anthemic prayer-like hit song, Tennessee.

Money came in but not for precious stones and big cars. Instead, these pioneers of the conscious rap game took one big step for mankind by giving back and becoming the first African American artists to donate money to Nelson Mandela and the ANC. They used their voices and their status to the benefit of many underprivileged brothers and sisters around the world.

With the success of the single Mr Wendal, Arrested Development brought the issue of homelessness to the forefront. The group donated half of the royalty earnings from Mr Wendal to the National Coalition of the Homeless. Awards, chart success and accolades continued to follow. One of the highlights was being asked to write a song for Spike Lee’s movie about minister and human rights activist, Malcom X. The movie, X, went on to become one of Spike Lee’s most highly acclaimed works. The Arrested Development song, Revolution, would forever be associated with one of the most important movies in black culture. (Eighteen years later, the response that comes whenever the group performs this song is inspiring.

Their album, 3 years, 5 months and 2 days In The Life of…, sold over 4 million units, with singles from that maiden voyage playing like a soundtrack in the lives’ of so many people world wide Their sophomore release Zingalamaduni was a critics’ favorite. Although the album was well received and garnered another Grammy nomination, it failed to reach the same heights as the previous album. Nonetheless, it reached sales in excess of 500,000 copies.

Just as it seemed that positive hip hop had found a way of being embraced by the mainstream, a new wave of negative hip hop artists, demeaning women, glorifying drugs and promoting criminality, came along and energized the base at the corporate record companies, prompting record executives to inject more and more money to get these negative stereotypes into the minds and hearts of young people, of whom many, were desperately searching for their path and identity in life. The move proved to be an enormous success for these artists, while making corporations billions of dollars.

With the pressures of the music industry weighing heavily, and inner turmoil striking within the group, it was time for Arrested Development to take a break and redefine their individual and collective purpose. For some members, it was time to take a hiatus from the industry, for a few, it was time to start a family, while other members delved into new musical projects and collaborations.

In the year 2000, Arrested Development re emerged with a new lineup and a new album called “Heroes of the harvest” This time the inner turmoil was replaced by inner peace, the pressures of the industry were lifted, and one of hip hop’s best, was back rocking stages.

For the last eighteen years, Arrested Development has performed sold-out concerts in literally every part of the world. They continue to release new music and find new success in different corners of the globe. Their shows are a celebration of life. Experiencing an Arrested Development concert is an uplifting and spiritual event wrapped into one big party.

Arctic Monkeys coasting towards sixth UK Number 1 album

Arctic Monkeys are outselling the rest of the Top 20 combined on today’s Official Albums Chart Update with their new album Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino.

The sixth studio album from the Sheffield rock band has accumulated 66,000 combined chart sales after just three days on sale, 67% of which is made of physical copies on CD and vinyl.

All five of Arctic Monkeys’ previous studio albums have reached Number 1 in their release week on the Official Albums Chart, and now their latest effort is set to continue that run of form. Click here to view our chart of Arctic Monkeys’ albums ranked in order of sales.

Three more of Arctic Monkeys’ classic albums are also set to impact the Top 40 this week: their fifth record AM is up 29 places to Number 11; the group’s debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not propels 30 positions to Number 20; and their sophomore release Favourite Worst Nightmare scales 71 placings to Number 40.

Charlie Puth is one of a further three new entries inside today’s midweek Top 10 – he’s on course for an Official Chart personal best with Voicenotes at Number 3. Roots guitarist Ry Cooder is set for his highest ever chart placing, and seventh UK Top 40 appearance with The Prodigal Son at Number 8, plus dream-pop duo Beach House are chasing their first Top 10 with their seventh album 7 at Number 9.

Dua and Calvin eye fifth week at Number 1 while Childish Gambino and Shawn Mendes advance on Top 10

Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris dance collaboration One Kiss is currently looking good for a potential fifth week at the top of the Official Singles Chart, but with Ariana Grande climbing back up one place in today’s Official Chart Update with No Tears Left To Cry, will there be an upset when the chart is announced on Friday?

New entries and high climbers

Last week’s highest new entry from Childish Gambino – the alter ego of actor Donald Glover – looks set to storm the Top 10 this week, as This is America rises eight places to Number 6.

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes looks nailed on for a fourth Top 10, as In My Blood aims for a new peak, zooming fourteen slots to 7 after its acoustic version was released, and David Guetta and Sia’s Flames has a shot at going Top 10 for the first time, rising two places to 9.

With their fifth studio album Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino looking set to take the Number 1 album spot this Friday, Arctic Monkeys’ tracks make an impact on the Official Singles Chart too, with Four Out of Five (12), Star Treatment (13), and One Point Perspective (17) all making a Top 20 showing at this stage.

Girls, Rita Ora’s collaboration with Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX, starts at 18, and there could be a 13th Top 40 for Selena Gomez on the way – Back to You is new at 37.

Eurovision Song Contest: SuRie aiming for Official Chart Top 40 placing with Storm

UK’s 2018 Eurovision Song Contest hopeful SuRie could make up for her disappointing night in Lisbon on Saturday with a Top 40 hit. Despite finishing 24th out of a possible 26 countries while battling a stage invasion, Storm is in at 32 on today’s Official Chart Update.

Outside of the Top 40, Netta, the Eurovision winner from Israel, currently occupies Number 57 with Toy, and runner-up Eleni Foureira of Cyprus is at Number 72 with Fuego.

K. Flay – an edgy, lively performace

Salt Lake City, UT – May 6, 2018 – As a music and tour photographer based in Salt Lake City, Utah, I’ve seen a lot of really cool performances.  K. Flay however, has been on my bucket list for quite some time.

They took the stage right at 9:15 as scheduled to a sold out crowd at The Complex.  Kristine, who sprung into the music world accidentally in the bay area while attending college at Stanford, is a lyrical genius.  She’s real, and her lyrics aren’t afraid to talk about the darkness this life can bring along with the bright spots along the way.  She doesn’t sugar coat her view of the world and it’s so refreshing.

The bands quick beats are electric, mixing a bit of hip hop with rock and pop.   She has a very unique voice that is edgy as hell, yet beautiful.  And did I mention she can rhyme with the best?

One thing I loved about the show was the stage and lights.  It’s a crowd pleaser and it’s easy to love her performance.  She connects with the crowd and has amazing stage presence.  She typcially dresses all in black with killer boots to, well, boot.  She owns the stage.  Back and forth, hair whips, jumping and rocking out!  She also shows emotion with her music falling to her knees at the front of the stage during more dramatic moments giving the front row a glimpse into the raw expressions on her face.

A few of my favorite songs on the set list were “High Enough“, and “Dreamers“.  I’ve linked them to Spotify for your listening pleasure.

All in all, I was impressed and frankly, can’t wait to see her live again.

PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT LOCAL AND NATIONAL LGBTQ+ CHARITIES INCLUDING
ENCIRCLE, TREVOR PROJECT, TEGAN AND SARA FOUNDATION & MORE

Salt Lake City, UT – April 2, 2018 – Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons today
announced the second annual LOVELOUD Festival (http://loveloudfest.com) designed to
ignite the vital conversation about what it means to unconditionally love, understand,
accept, and support LGBTQ+ youth in our communities. The 2018 LOVELOUD Festival
will be powered by AT&T.

AT&T supports various initiatives that promote safety and inclusion for LGBTQ youth, including The Trevor Project’s suicide prevention and crisis intervention service. Together, through music and an inspiring message, LOVELOUD and AT&T can share our vision of a future where LGBTQ youth are connected to love and acceptance.

LGBTQ+ teen suicide, often caused by a lack of communication or an absence of
acceptance, is one of the most troubling issues in the community. The numbers are
staggering:
• Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the US for youth (teenagers) according to
the Center for Disease Control.
• LGBTQ+ youth that come from a home or community where they are not accepted are
eight times more likely to commit suicide.

“We at LOVELOUD are determined to help create a more loving and accepting environment for them, while also hoping to raise more than $1 million dollars for local and national LGBTQ+ charities” said founder and Imagine Dragons front-man Dan Reynolds. “We look forward to a day dedicated to celebrating their diversity while listening to great music and inspiring speakers.”

LOVELOUD Festival will take place Saturday, July 28, 2018 in Salt Lake City, UT at the
Eccles Stadium and feature performances by Grammy® Award-winning artists Imagine
Dragons, Zedd and Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda along with Grace Vanderwaal, Neon
Trees’ Tyler Glenn and A.W. Stand-up comedian, actor and writer Cameron Esposito will also perform and emcee the day’s festivities. More performers and speakers will be
announced in the coming weeks.

LOVELOUD tickets will go on sale Friday, April 6 at 10AM MST. Festival goers can
purchase tickets HERE. Doors open for the LOVELOUD Festival at 2pm and the music
begins at 3:30pm. The festival will feature food, beverages and a number of other
activities for fans of all ages and interests. The LOVELOUD Foundation will donate
proceeds from this year’s event to benefit LGBTQ+ organizations including Encircle, the Tegan and Sara Foundation and the Trevor Project.

“LOVELOUD’s inspiring goal is to raise $1 million dollars for LGBTQ+ organizations in
one day, and we know that this amazing program of music and speakers will entertain,
educate and inspire everyone who comes out in support on July 28th," said Tegan and Sara. “We started the Tegan and Sara Foundation to bring resources and attention to
issues affecting the LGBTQ community, and we are proud to work with the LOVELOUD
team to amplify their urgent message of acceptance and unconditional love.”

As part of this quest, Dan Reynold’s created a documentary centered around
LOVELOUD, called Believer. The film received runner up for the “Festival Favorite Award” at Sundance Film Festival 2018 and will premiere on HBO in June.

LOVELOUD’s inaugural festival bowed August 26, 2017 in Orem, UT at Brent Brown
Ballpark. The event drew 17,000 concertgoers and featured live music from Imagine
Dragons, Neon Trees, Krewella, Nicholas Petricca of Walk the Moon (Acoustic), Joshua
James, and Aja Volkman. In 2017, LOVELOUD Foundation lent its support to various
charities such as Encircle and Stand4Kind, as well as national charities, The Trevor
Project and GLAAD.

The LOVELOUD Foundation is a catalyst to bring communities and families together to
help ignite the vital conversation about what it means to unconditionally love our LGBTQ+youth. LOVELOUD offers hope to young people, letting them know they’re not alone and encouraging acceptance in the home and community. It all begins with talking about, sharing and showing the realities of what LGBTQ+ teens face daily. The LOVELOUD Foundation is a 501c3.

AT&T’s commitment to equality and inclusion for the LGBTQ community began in 1975,
