GENRE-BLURRING ARTIST ZZZ. RELEASES WARNER RECORDS DEBUT EP ‘SAM’
Genre-defying artist Zzz. releases the wildly eclectic debut EP SAM via Warner Records. Included on the 7-song body of work is the recent single “WHEN U WRONG” featuring Alabama rapper NoCap, as well as the new single and video “NOTHING 2 U,” which boasts production from Grammy-nominated artist Travis Barker. The ambitious project showcases Zzz.’s ear for tender, disarming hooks and his knack for penning gut-wrenching and all-too-relatable lyrics.
SAM kicks off with the searing new single “NOTHING 2 U” — an angst-filled snapshot of the emotional fallout of a breakup. After pleading his case on the opening verse, Zzz. finally pulls the plug on the chorus. “I just need you to know that I tried everything,” he belts, but “everything means nothing to you”. The raw lyrics are reflected in the video, which finds Zzz. observing his ex through a snow globe attached to a speaker.
Next up are recent singles “U GIRL,” a track brimming with insights on love and loss, and the vulnerable “WHEN U WRONG.” The latter captures the mental anguish that accompanies a long-distance relationship. Another standout is the genre-jumping “Lie,” which finds Zzz. giving it his all emotionally over the synth-pop production. “As good as I bottle up my feelings,” he sings over distorted guitar picking and infectious percussion, ” they’ve been eating me alive.” Other highlights include “19,” a danceable coming-of-age digression peppered with brutal honesty, and “I MOVED AWAY.”
“I put the headphones on and go for it,” Zzz. says of his process. “I move quickly and get the thoughts out — that’s the way it’s the realest. It’s a live documentary of my life.” The EP’s arrival was preceded by a flurry of tracks, including “Fly,” “X’s & O’s,” “Running Away,” “Losing Everything,” and “Sad and Alone” with Trippie Redd.
While still making a name for himself, Zzz.already possesses the poise and presence of a veteran. Now, with SAM, Zzz. shares his truth — and his incredible versatility — scars and all.
