JENA MALONE ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM FLOWERS FOR MEN FOR MAY 8TH
Talented multi-hyphenate singer-songwriter and actor Jena Malone announces her first album in nearly a decade, and first-ever full length project released under her own name. Flowers for Men is out everywhere May 8 via her record label There Was An Old Woman Records. Alongside this news, she unveils her lead single “Barstow” with a cinematic music video and announces a series of tour dates.
Flowers for Men channels a sound that Jena calls “sci-folk”; it’s otherworldly, emotionally bare, and lyrically revelatory. The album was co-produced by Jamie Johnson and documents Jena’s journey in undoing the expectations and hierarchies around relationships.
Jena says of Flowers for Men, “As soon as my son was born, I know I’d never love another human like I love him and started questioning the very traditional ideas of monogamy that had been ingrained in me. I began reading about polyamory and exploring different relationship styles, and some of the most honest songs I’ve ever written came from learning to navigate love from a new perspective.”
Named a town in California’s Mojave Desert, lead single “Barstow” is an evocative first look into the album’s narrative landscape. Amplified by the accompanying Jennifer Reeder-directed music video, the song captures a tale of longing. Jena pulls into a dimly-lit motel with moody, neon lighting and encounters a doppelgänger of sorts in her own reflection. Easily interpreted as either memories of a past lover or past iterations of oneself, “Barstow” embodies Jena’s mysterious sci-folk ambitions. Flowers for Men is a continuation of a lifelong love of songwriting that began as a child growing up in Lake Tahoe, which she later continued with her bands The Shoe and Jena Malone and her Bloodstains. Alongside her music, Jena has a storied career in film and television, including lauded performances in Donnie Darko, The Hunger Games, Love Lies Bleeding and many more. Next, Jena takes her acting prowess to the newly announced Duffer Brothers show, The Boroughs, to be released on May 21 on Netflix.
Following the release of the upcoming album, Jena takes her talents to stages in major cities across North America. She kicks off the run with a performance at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco, before stopping in places like Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, New York City, and more.
