North Philadelphia rapper YXNG K.A releases the official video for “Why Would I” featuring Chicago heavyweight Lil Durk. Sauntering around a lounge as a therapist takes notes, the duo trades affecting verses about the stresses of turning from street kids into stars. The track’s downtempo blues is paired visually with diamond-encrusted chains and pocketful’s of bands, a contrast that the teenaged K.A has captured so poetically throughout his young career.
K.A and Durk sing their hearts out about the lavish life that wasn’t in their plans on “Why Would I.” In the video, you can see the depth of their creative chemistry, which comes from related rap styles, and their shared backgrounds as kids who’ve risen up from tough situations. They also have a similar sense of humor. Playing into the visual’s wellness theme, they’re later at a “yoga” session that’s really an excuse to feature a bunch of twerking. The clip colors the stirring song with feelings you wouldn’t immediately pick up from just listening to it.
“Why Would I” is the centerpiece of the deluxe version of K.A’s album REAPER SZN. The original, which featured guest spots from fellow stars J.I., Lil Tjay, and Don Q among others, came out at the close of 2020. It was the follow-up to his debut EP, BABY REAPER, which came out in May via Double O Records/Interscope Records. His music to date reflects his wise-beyond-his-years writing, which has earned him co-signs from stars like 21 Savage, Meek Mill, and more. It also landed K.A a major-label deal just months after he created his first song. The “Why Would I” video confirms that hype—YXNG K.A is in it for the long haul.
