Meet BlackFlag, the Groundbreaking Marketing Agency Trusted by A-List Artists and Major Labels to Cut Through the Noise
If you happened to visit the Silver Lake Erewhon in Los Angeles in Mid-July, you might have encountered something strange: Tinashe squaring up with a white BMW, letting her feelings out by smashing the car to bits with a sledgehammer. The unexpected behavior by the pop star known for hits like “2 On” and “Nasty” earned the attention of outlets like Deux Moi, TMZ, Complex, VICE, and more. Why would Tinashe, known for her ice cold demeanor, stoop to such antics? An eagle-eyed observer would have noticed that the hood of the BMW was emblazoned with the words “Crash Out,” the title of her recent single, and that the usually-peaceful location in L.A. was chosen strategically.
Tinashe’s stunt was one of many activations spearheaded by BlackFlag, the non-traditional marketing and creative solutions firm that has become a go-to for A-List artists and major labels who want to cut through the digital noise. Founded by Jordan Chalmers, previously VP of Innovation at Atlantic Records where he spent 10+ years, BlackFlag specializes in shepherding innovative activations from concept to execution, utilizing their vast rolodex of uniquely talented creators to achieve what other firms cannot. With their one-of-a-kind marketing strategies, BlackFlag aims to deepen artists’ relationships with their fans, creating unforgettable moments and physical artifacts that enhance narratives and make indelible memories.
Just last week, Trippie Redd and 10k Projects tapped BlackFlag to create a viral moment out of the release of his new album NDA. Working with various creators, BlackFlag commissioned and crafted a custom briefcase, bright red in color and emblazoned with the album title, NDA, on the front. Opening the briefcase revealed a tablet screen, which transmitted a confidential message from Trippie himself, introducing the briefcase’s contents: an iPod Touch pre-loaded with 7 highlights from the album, and a moleskein-bound NDA agreeement, complete with a branded ballpoint pen. Trippie and BlackFlag sent briefcases to dozens of the premier tastemakers, influencers, and press outlets in hip-hop, generation hundreds of millions of crucial impressions during album release week.
Previously, BlackFlag partnered with Young Thug and 300 Ent. to gift living tarantulas in a bespoke terrarium to two dozen of the highest-impact press outlets, streamers, and influencers in the game today, in advance of his album UY SCUTI. The gifting was a smashing success, generating over 1 billion impressions across social and traditional media, but viewers who only witnessed the end result might not understand the organization required to pull it off. BlackFlag employed a local arachnologist (in Staten Island!) to source 25 exotic tarantulas and provide care instructions, found a creator who specializes in custom terrariums to make the enclosure livable, ordered specially-made terrarium glass from Vietnam, contracted a creator to construct the custom-branded packaging, and oversaw the transportation of the arachnids to safely escort them to their final destinations.
Young Thug’s spider delivery represented just another day in the office for BlackFlag, who have designed bespoke merch and activations for dozens of the world’s biggest artists. Some examples:
- Teamed with NBA YoungBoy to create a mobile game called #FreeYB, in which the player schemes a prison break to release the artist from his prison sentence. The app became the most-downloaded game on the App Store, generating over 328k downloads and over 40 million impressions
- In anticipation of Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake 2, BlackFlag orchestrated a UFO encounter in the middle of Manhattan, combining CGI and live-action elements (digital insertion of a UFO into real cell phone footage, activating 50 extras to react IRL). The campaign earned the agency Bronze recognition at the Clio Awards for “Music Marketing Innovation”
- Worked with Atlantic Records to make “Boston” hitmaker Stella Lefty‘s first-ever L.A. headlining show special, adorning a retro pickup truck with sunflowers, and providing Polaroid cameras to fans, turning the surprise into a signing/meet-and-greet opportunity
- Designed and created 1,000 skeleton masks inspired by Skrilla and the cover of his Z album, surprising the artist by distributing the masks to fans attending his Philadelphia hometown show. Skrilla used footage of fans wearing the masks in his music video for “Bazin,” which has more than 50 million impressions across socials
- Hosted a road rally in Midtown Manhattan to celebrate Don Toliver‘s album Octane and his performance at Madison Square Garden, bringing 50 cars to the World’s Most Famous Arena to bring a taste of Houston car culture to the Big Apple. BlackFlag did it even bigger in L.A., bringing 60 cars, 25 bikes, a procession low riders, and custom flags to celebrate Don’s blockbuster release.
- Connected with Nik Bentel Studio to create a one-of-one “mixer bag” for PinkPantheress, who proudly wore the bag during her NPR Tiny Desk performance
In addition, BlackFlag has worked with artists like Gunna, Mariah The Scientist, Kodak Black, Key Glock, Meghan Trainor, and Fka Twigs, public figures like Tom Brady, brands like Netflix, GoPuff, LVMH, and Spotify, and many more. Some of the world’s largest marketing agencies, including Wieden+Kennedy, rely on BlackFlag for creative solutions.
In an age dominated by algorithms and inflated attention, BlackFlag creates tangible moments that cut to the heart of an artist’s essence and amplify without feeling like an advertisement.
“BlackFlag is not religious, but we preach 3 things,” says BlackFlag CEO Jordan Chalmers. “Relationships over revenue; transparency is the key to success; the power of proximity is real.”
