Nina Cohbam shares her new single and video ‘Mejor Contigo (Homesick)’

Introducing rising singer-songwriter Nina Cobham to the Toast roster with her latest single, ‘Mejor Contigo (Homesick)’, a heartfelt and buoyant slice of alt-pop that effortlessly blends English and Spanish lyricism with Nina’s signature gossamer vocals. ‘Mejor Contigo (Homesick)’ [‘Mejor Contigo’ being Spanish for ‘Better With You’] encapsulates themes of love and belonging, pulling listeners into Nina’s world of emotional vulnerability and self-discovery. The track speaks to the moment when hyper-independence gives way to connection, exploring the comfort and trust found in allowing someone into your space.

“I love home and being in my own space, but there was an extra layer now too of missing this person,” Nina explains. “At the beginning, I was living in my studio apartment, doing my own thing, but then someone comes into your life, and you end up incorporating them in it. Suddenly, I wanted him in my space.”

The concept of a chosen family might be a widely acknowledged one, but it’s the idea of a chosen place of belonging that has become a cornerstone of Nina’s life and, since the release of her striking 2019 debut single ‘Te extraño, pero…’, her art. Born in Leeds and now based in Manchester, Nina spent a transformative period of her early years frequently visiting and subsequently, between the ages of seven and 10, living in a small Spanish mountain town. No matter where the family later uprooted to, it was there that they would regularly return.

Having written music since her teens with the laser focus of knowing she wanted to be an artist (“There was no Plan B,” she notes), when she took one of these annual trips back to Spain in her late teens, her loved ones had a bone to pick. “They made a joke about how I only make songs for my English family and not for them,” she laughs. “Because some of them are from an older generation that don’t speak English, I wanted to include them. But then, as soon as I started incorporating this whole half of my personality and brain and upbringing, things started to click.”

Since that lightbulb moment, Nina has spent the past half decade building an intoxicating musical world of bilingual musical storytelling. Still only 23, she’s already been on a journey to find where her creative heart lies, fleshing out a palette informed equally by alternative pop and Spanish bossa nova, and gaining more than 50 million streams with her three EPs (2021’s ‘what colour does this feel like?’, 2023’s ‘Middle of Nowhere’ and last year’s ‘Antes’) along the way.

With dreamy melodies and atmospheric production, ‘Mejor Contigo’ is an invitation into Nina’s world—one where love, identity, and cultural duality intertwine seamlessly. Stay tuned for more to come from Nina Cobham.
