Seraphina Simone shares new single ‘Blue Eyes’
Seraphina Simone’s recent tracks, ‘Better Days’ and ‘Liverpool’, have instigated a new wave of discovery for her imaginative subversion of alt-pop sounds – supported by fresh 6 Music airplay from Lauren Laverneas well as a groundswell of acclaim. Now she builds towards the release of her long-awaited second EP by sharing the new single ‘Blue Eyes’ which premiered this morning with a first play on Lauren Laverne’s 6Music Breakfast Show.
‘Blue Eyes’ captures that moment when a casual relationship catches you by surprise and suddenly becomes an all-encompassing infatuation. The song is structured in a way that expresses the whirlwind of emotions that accompany such a realisation: the fear represented by the detuned synth textures that supports the swooning beauty of her voice, but a surge of euphoria, excitement and anticipation as the sumptuous hook takes flight.
Seraphina says, “Blue Eyes is about being full-throttle chest-deep in a crush. Being so aware of their energy that you feel when they’ve entered a room full of people because the air changes. It’s that sugar-high, butterflies, chaotic kinetic rush of being really into someone and living off daydreams and fantasies.’’
‘Blue Eyes’ was solely written by Seraphina, who produced the track with Tommy Hill(also known as the solo artist I Know I Know). It was completed with mixing courtesy of James Kenosha.
‘Blue Eyes’ emerges as Seraphina prepares to play her first show of 2024 at The Courtyard Theatre on April 24th – limited tickets for which remain available HERE. While her solo shows have only been sporadic to date, she spent three years as a key member of Self Esteem’s live band, a journey which included multiple headline shows at the Eventim Apollo, and a Wembley Stadium set as special guests to Blur.
In addition to the upcoming EP, which also includes collaborations with Matt Wills (Charlotte Plank, Alice Merton) and the acclaimed post-classical artist Jay Chakravorty, Seraphina has applied her far-reaching creativity to some recent new projects. She has been working on songs and score ideas for an upcoming play from writer Tallulah Brown (‘When The Birds Come’, ‘Songlines’) and composed and produced the music for a new campaign for the bespoke tailoring house LAWTON.
While her work with Self Esteem put Seraphina on the biggest of stages, she simultaneously set the foundations for her solo career. Her first tracks emerged during the lockdown era, with her initial independent releases including ‘Cherry <8’ and ‘Blue Devil’ paving the way for her 2022 debut EP ‘Milk Teeth’. Her music weaves between pop and indie, a combination that summarises her key influences. While she loved the London indie scene, her Cherokee and Greek heritage made her feel like an outsider in audiences full of white faces leading her back to her first love: the massive hooks and big emotions of pop.
Her early life is just as interesting: split between her mother’s home in London – often full of creatives and bohemians, as varied as Chrissie Hynde and Billy Idol – and Los Angeles with her father, Terence Trent D’Arby (now Sananda Maitreya), who had chosen Prince, Miles Davis and Pete Townsend to be her godparents.
