Camille Vasquez Says Pressure of Trial Made Johnny Depp’s Legal Team “Overprepare”

In a CBS MORNINGS exclusive, co-host Gayle King interviews the young lawyers behind Johnny Depp’s defamation trial win against ex-wife Amber Heard. Attorney Camille Vasquez, who rose to fame following the televised trial, also addresses Heard’s appeal of the verdict and how the younger lawyers on the team offered a unique perspective that helped them build the case.

-Camille Vasquez on responding to Amber Heard’s appeal:

GAYLE KING: Last week we heard that Amber Heard was going to appeal the verdict. What did you think when you heard that? What was your reaction?

CAMILLE VASQUEZ: It was expected. I mean, she’s indicated since the day she lost the trial that she was going to appeal.

KING: Do you have to plan a strategy to respond to that?

VASQUEZ: Absolutely. And we did. Mr. Depp ended up filing his own appeals so that the court could have the full record. And it–you know, she insists on continuing to litigate this matter. We have to protect our client’s interest.

KING: So is it safe to say that if she hadn’t appealed you all would not have appealed either? You would have moved on?

VASQUEZ: Yes.

KING: Is that a fair statement?

VASQUEZ: That’s a very fair statement.

-Vasquez on her legal team:

VASQUEZ: This case I think called for a younger team.

KING: Why? Why did you think that?

VASQUEZ: Because the parties were young. Right? And they resonate with a younger audience. And you need those perspectives. I think young people have a fresh perspective on especially these issues, the issues that we were discussing in this case – abuse, Me Too.
