Chappell Roan at the Velvet Underground in Toronto With Openers Just Peachy, Miss Shay Dee, and Angell Morana

Chappell Roan performed at the Velvet Underground in Toronto, Canada as part of her ‘Naked in North America’ Tour on March 3, 2023. With an all-female band accompanying her, Chappell Roan came out on stage with explosive energy and her signature look, which I would describe as glam-rock meets Hannah Montana. Chappell Roan (born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) is an American singer and songwriter from Willard, Missouri, and is now based out of Los Angeles.

Roan’s unique sound draws from a variety of genres, including pop, indie, and alternative, and is characterized by her powerful voice and honest, introspective lyrics. Her music often deals with themes of heartbreak, self-doubt, and growing up, exploring the complexities of human emotion with a raw and vulnerable edge.

Chappell Roan’s big break came in 2017 with the release of her debut single “Good Hurt,” which quickly amassed millions of streams on Spotify and earned her critical acclaim. But she’s probably best known for “Pink Pony Club,” a song that she wrote to rebel against her small-town roots and has resonated with the queer community, which Roan is a strong advocate for. Indeed, the opening act was made up of three local drag queens, Just Peachy @itsmejustpeachy, Miss Shay Dee @msshaydee, and Angell Morana @angellmorana and consisted of high-energy lip syncing performances to famous pop songs like Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance. They were certainly a fantastic choice to warm up the crowd, and set the vibes.

Roan’s fans, affectionately known as ‘ponies’ were dressed up in disco cowgirl chic, just like what is featured in her music videos and TikTok tutorials. Fans sang and danced along to new favorites like ‘My Kink is Karma’, ‘Naked in Manhattan,’ and of course ‘Pink Pony Club’ during the encore.

Chappell Roan recently parted ways with Atlantic Records, her label since the age of 17, and now tours and produces music as an independent artist. She has stated in interviews that a large part of her success is due to having an extremely supportive network made up of friends willing to bust their asses for her. Despite the split with Atlantic, Roan seems to be unstoppable on her upwards trajectory. She recently opened for Olivia Rodrigo and is about to perform to a sold-out show at her hometown in Missouri.
