Dak Prescott had a remarkable day from start to finish. Season openers are always special, but becoming the highest-paid player in the league and then leading his team to a 33-17 road victory made it unforgettable.

Despite the looming contract extension negotiations with the Dallas Cowboys, Prescott insisted they didn’t distract him from preparing for the season opener. However, the announcement of his four-year, $240 million extension on Sunday morning seemed to lift a significant weight off the team’s future.

Prescott expressed his hope that once the contract was signed, the focus could shift entirely to the team’s success. “I hope after today we’re done talking about it and my pockets,” he said with a laugh. “And could just move forward and focus on this team and the success that we plan to have and what we’re working toward.”

On Thursday, Prescott explained that he left most of the negotiations to his agent, Todd France, and the Cowboys. After a brief conversation with Jerry Jones at practice on Saturday, where Jones encouraged him to “surprise the world and get this thing behind us,” Prescott had just one more discussion with France before receiving the good news via FaceTime on Sunday morning.

The call came while Prescott was getting body work done in his hotel room with teammate and close friend Ezekiel Elliott, who was the first to congratulate him. Prescott then shared the news with his marketing team, girlfriend, and father before refocusing on the game.

“If you would’ve asked me this yesterday, I would’ve said I was going into the game without [an agreement],” he said. “And that didn’t mean that contract talks were going to end, but I was just going to focus on what I can control.”

One of the first calls Prescott received in return was from Jerry Jones, who congratulated him and expressed his desire for Prescott to be the quarterback in Dallas. “He said obviously the player, but he also said the person and that meant a lot. I just want to hold up my end of the deal and deliver for him.”

For Prescott, holding up his end means winning a Super Bowl. Despite the challenges of his eight seasons, he remains confident that a championship is within reach. Before the deal was finalized, Prescott stated his goal to be the “QB who wins it” in Dallas. Now committed to the Cowboys for the foreseeable future, he’s determined to achieve that goal.

“That’s my only motivation to hold up my part of this deal and just deliver that,” he said. “That’s what is at the forefront of my mind, not the money. It’s about holding up my end of the deal and it’s winning, and I want to do it here.”
