DODIE ANNOUNCES DELUXE EDITION OF NOT FOR LACK OF TRYING – OUT OCTOBER 23RD
dodie releases with two new tracks ‘TAKE A HINT, LET ME GO’ (aka The List) & ‘STILL I STARE… AND COMPARE’ (aka Smart Girl) in a deluxe edition of her remarkable sophomore album ‘Not For Lack Of Trying’ via Fontana Records.
Expanding the world of ‘Not For Lack Of Trying’, the deluxe edition releases on 23rd October and brings together the two new songs, recorded live alongside some of dodie’s closest friends. Taking over a beloved countryside studio on her 31st birthday, the sessions saw the group relearn and replay songs together, teach each other new material and jam late into the night with an 1800s-themed murder mystery thrown in for good measure.
In her own words dodie expresses, “The context of all of these live versions is that all my darling musical friends agreed to come on down and spend a week together in a countryside studio learning and recording these songs together. The week actually began with my 31st birthday party – a murder mystery themed party where everyone dressed up into their Victorian characters and pretended to solve the mystery of my pretend twin sister’s death…
I am so baffled and grateful as to how I found a group to commit so hard to such stupid fun. Honestly it was a dream – a few friends in the live room, jamming out to practice the next song, three girls in the kitchen, planning out harmonies over a pot of tea, a couple of the lads on a walk up the grassy hills to see the horses… and then we’d all come together to create this new version of a song I wrote. And now I so luckily have these recordings where that week of friendship is literally embedded into the grooves of each track! I can hear everyone’s particular styles in their piano playing, or Gret’s giggle while holding harmonies – the people I love! In a gorgeous place all working together to make something beautiful.”
Released in 2025, ‘Not For Lack Of Trying’ found the North London-born singer-songwriter striving for meaning in a challenging chapter of her life. Written mostly between London and Los Angeles and produced alongside Grammy-nominated Joe Rubel (Maisie Peters, Griff, Sigrid), the album packages her reflections on everything from falling in love and breaking up to comparison culture and struggles with depression.
The record features singles ‘Tall Kids’, ‘Darling, Angel, Baby’, ‘I Feel Bad For You, Dave’ and ‘I’M FINE!’, the latter marking dodie’s first new solo music in three years. Across the album, the familiar muted rhythms of rubber bridge guitar, undulating strings and haunting harmonies that have long characterised dodie’s music are pushed into bold new territory.
More than anything, ‘Not For Lack Of Trying’ documented dodie learning to be patient with her own process and accepting the uncertainty that comes with trying to figure things out. With ‘Fruit in the Sun’ and ‘As Far As We Know’, she returns to that world from two different vantage points: one lingering in the discomfort of standing still, the other beginning to wonder what might happen when you move.
Alongside the deluxe edition, dodie today announces a run of UK and North American live dates under a new tour ‘Not For Lack of Clarinets’. This special, intimate evening sees dodie reimagine ‘Not For Lack of Trying’, live and in full – with every song newly rescored for two clarinets.
