Aussie indie-pop darling G-Flip rocked London’s KOKO Camden on Wednesday evening for the first of three sold out shows. G-Flip is out supporting their new record, DRUMMER, ultimately playing 8 of its 12 tracks along with a choice few old favourites and their new, instantly classic cover of Taylor Swift‘s Cruel Summer.

Opening for G-Flip was Blu DeTiger, New York bass virtuoso, who’s debut record is coming later this year. Blu led her two piece band – drums and guitar, with Blu on Bass – through a thirty minute set that saw her funk-pop viral hits get transformed into full blown funk rockers. Much like the live shows by bands such as HAIM, and, to some degree Chromeo, with whom Blu recently collaborated with on the blutooth/enough 4 u EP, Blu’s live set brings an hard edge to her smooth studio tracks. Blu played the stage like an absolute pro, prowling amidst her bandmates both on foot and on fret. Not to be left out, Blu played her own Taylor Swift cover – a snippet of the classic track Style, which led as an intro to Blu’s own ode to partners-in-style, Vintage.

As dynamic and impressive as Blu DeTiger was, the was no upstaging the absolute dynamo that is G-Flip. G came out on fire with a truly awesome drum solo, as their band slowly joined in on their respective instruments. G alternated between drums and guitar most of the evening, with just a handful of soulful forays on to the keyboards. They were accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass, as well as a few choice backing tracks. Much like Blu DeTiger before them, G-Flip’s indie-pop was transformed by a high octane rock performance. DRUMMER standouts like 7 Days and Worst Person Alive really shine on stage – G’s powerful raw vocals and their band’s ferocious intensity give the polished studio tracks a bite that’s dangerously infectious.

There’s no doubt that G-Flips front row faithful were suitably satiated. G-Flip took their time to connect with the audience, handing out merch and basking in their unexpected success. “We didn’t think we could sell out one!” they exclaimed, a nod to the honour of filling such a storied venue three times. They then let loose a secret – they’re returning to London this year. They’ll be back here at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in September.

G-Flip finished their show with a shout out to their wife, Chrishell Stause-Flip from the hit TV show Selling Sunset, who arrived the next day – and then opened the encore with the aforementioned cover of Cruel Summer. The crowd upstaged G here – singing the bridge in true swiftie fashion, while G moved from guitar to drums.

G-Flip and their band tore through their 90 minute set with polished abandon. While incredibly powerful on its own, an hour and a half and 16 songs is swore fully too short for a performance of this magnitude. One gets the sense that both the band and the crowd would revel in the transformation of a G-Flip show twice the length.
