JODY FONTAINE OF AG CLUB DROPS VIDEO FOR ‘FUNNY FACE’ OFF OF HIS NEW SOLO PROJECT THANK YOU, GOODNIGHT!
Following the release of his acclaimed debut solo EP Thank You, Goodnight, AG Club’s Jody Fontaine returns with the official video for standout track “Funny Face,” available now. One of the project’s most intimate moments, the song was written for Fontaine’s girlfriend as the two reflected on growing older together, transforming fears around aging into a tender meditation on love, vulnerability, and the hope of sharing a lifetime. Anchored by warm acoustic guitars, understated flamenco flourishes, and Fontaine’s unmistakably emotive songwriting, “Funny Face” further showcases the genre-blurring, deeply human approach that defines Thank You, Goodnight.
Thank You, Goodnight. emerged from an intense creative period working alongside producers Ryan Yoo and Nick Velez (BROCKHAMPTON, keshi), whom Jody credits with “completely shifting” his understanding of himself as an artist. Together, they established a rapid-fire recording process with strict rules — no playback, no overthinking, see every idea through completely — that fostered freedom, forcing Jody to let go of control and lean fully into instinct.
“That environment made me uncomfortable at first because I tend to over-strategize,” explains Jody. “But eventually you stop trying to make the ‘right’ song and just become water. That’s when the best ideas start happening. I spent the last few years trying to become secure in myself and my process, trying to develop the confidence necessary to maintain a solo career. This project feels like my first child with no joint custody. I feel protective, proud, emotional — maybe even a little delusional. But this music feels like me in the purest way possible. It’s mine.”
The project drop follows last month’s opening salvo “Precious,” which The FADER added to their Songs You Need In Your Life rundown and playlist, praising the single for “combining headbanging braggadocio with a looming sense of ache.” As a whole, Thank You, Goodnight. outlines a sort of hero’s journey, unpacking some deep-seated fears (of isolation, abandonment, misperception, and rejection) on the way to personal acceptance and artistic breakthrough. The project’s range is further highlighted on standout track “Toy,” which pairs a sample of Raphael Saadiq’s “(Lay Your Head on My) Pillow” with inspiration drawn from Marvin Gaye’s “Piece of Clay.” Blending nostalgic soul influences with Fontaine’s imaginative songwriting, the track highlights the breadth of his musical knowledge and the fearless genre-blurring that defines Thank You, Goodnight.
Jody’s solo work follows AG Club’s summer 2025 single “Again,” which found him and Baby Boy raising a toast to the good life over a breezy track that also featured in the New Balance 1000 for JD Sports campaign. Before that came the group’s beloved 2024 mixtape BRODIE WORLD, a whimsical and electric body of work praised by Stereogum for its “day-glo, reckless, youthful charm” and by Alternative Press as a “tremendous experiment in having fun.”
Since emerging in 2019, AG Club has steadily developed one of hip-hop’s most unpredictable and expansive catalogs, earning acclaim from Billboard, NYLON, HYPEBEAST, UPROXX, and more while appearing at festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Camp Flog Gnaw, Austin City Limits, and the X Games. Through it all, Jody has helped shape the crew’s distinct world — one built on experimentation, cultural fluency, and radical emotional honesty.
Now Jody Fontaine enters his most personal creative era, leaping from that foundation to dive deeper into the ideas, impulses, and fascinating contradictions that have fueled his rise so far.
