What an exciting Saturday night at the Met Philadelphia! I had no idea I’d be in for an amazing night. This was an introduction to Nubya Garcia and Khruangbin and I’m glad we met! Their music will be in heavy rotation on my Apple Music. My heart goes out to fans who tried to purchase tickets at the box office. The show sold out and I saw why.

Saxophonist, Nubya Garcia hit the stage with a mysterious look. Black dress, black shades and a black fedora. Accompanying Nubya on stage was Jahari Stampley on piano, Lawrence on bass and Sam Jones on the drums. Nubya’s performance is expressive and passionate. Music without lyrics can seem long and rambling, but Garcia’s energetic performance kept fans engaged. Her fresh modern jazz style had fans excited.

As curtains are pulled back to reveal Khruangbin’s futuristic stage, fans instantly got excited, and so did I. Two big disco balls and 3 spaceship platforms filled the stage for band members of Khruangbin to perform. The band comprises Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar and Donald Ray “DJ” Johnson Jr. on drums.  Khruangbin’s performance blew me away. Listening to their albums doesn’t do any justice. Their music is definitely something you have to experience live.

Laura and Mark serenaded fans with music from their latest and past albums. Mark played  a mellow version of Maxwell’s “Don’t Ever Wonder.” That was the highlight of the show for me. Khruangbin also gave us a dope mashup including Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets”, Isley Brothers “Footsteps In the Dark” and a couple other hits from artist.  The band’s psychedelic rock, funk rock had fans passing out and grooving all night. I must say Mary Jane was in rotation amongst the crowd. Just when we thought the show was over, Khruangbin hit us with an encore. Fans were hoping to see Leon Bridges but the band performed two more songs for us.
