Neon Nostalgia and Global Vibes: Inside J Balvin’s Back to the Rayo Tour in Toronto at Scotiabank Arena

J Balvin’s Back to the Rayo Tour stop at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena on April 8 was one of those shows that completely takes over your senses—in the best way possible. It wasn’t just a concert, it was an experience, and the energy in the building from start to finish was unreal. Don’t get me wrong as a fan of all genres of music – I do dabble in Spanish / Latin music, but definitely as a Torontoian who doesn’t speak or understand the language. I was excited to attend my first Latin music show.
Right off the bat, the production was insane. Lights, Props, huge LED visuals—it felt like you were stepping into another world. But what really stood out was the way the whole aesthetic paid tribute to Back to the Future, reimagined through Balvin’s lens. The tour title Back to the Rayo (which means lightning in Spanish) played off the film in a clever, stylish way. There were futuristic visuals, nods to time travel, and this electric vibe running through the whole show—like Balvin was taking us on a trip through time, music, and culture.
The setlist was everything fans could’ve hoped for. He hit all the classics—“Ginza,” “Mi Gente,” “Ay Vamos,” and “Loco Contigo”—but also came heavy with new songs from his Rayo album. The new tracks didn’t feel like filler at all—they hit hard and showed off his evolution as an artist. Whether you’ve been a fan since day one or just hopped on recently, he gave you something to go wild for.
And man, the outfits and dancers.
Nothing over the top, but a lot of well coordinated planning for outfits that complimented each and every part of the show. Balvin definitely showed off his style without going over the top. A mix of statement pieces while remaining refined and adaptable to allow for movement and energy across the stage.
But what made the night memorable was how connected he was with the crowd. Between songs, he took time to speak to us directly, switching between English and Spanish, sharing how grateful he was to be in Toronto. And the crowd gave that love right back—singing every lyric, waving flags, dancing like we were all at a block party together. It didn’t matter if you were front row or up in the stands, you felt part of it. There was a real sense of warmth in the audience—a reminder that no matter how massive the stage gets, he never forgets the people
in the seats.
The love in the room was real, too. You could feel how much this city means to him, and how much his presence means to the diverse crowd that showed up. It wasn’t just a reggaeton concert—it was a celebration of Latin culture in a city built on multiculturalism. Balvin knows how to make arenas feel intimate, even when the production is larger-than-life.
All in all, the Toronto stop of the Rayo Tour was one of those rare shows that hits every mark—visually stunning, sonically great, emotionally charged, and unapologetically fun. If you missed it… well, you missed it!
J Balvin gave me a big reminder that though I may not understand every word and lyric, it was
an AMAZING show.
Definitely go catch another stop of the “Rayo” tour if you can if you’re a J Balvin fan.
