Multifarious Toronto producer and DJ, Paul Chin, launches his stunning, introspective and intricate new project, Full Spectrumtoday. Full Spectrum is a bright return as Paul’s first album in five years, and documents a period of creativity and collaboration, featuring Canadian artists Shad, Desirée Dawson, pHoenix Pagliacci and Rebekah Hawker. Listen to it here.

In light of postponing an upcoming launch show at Toronto’s Rivoli (originally set for April 2 – new date to be confirmed soon), Paul will deliver a livestreamed DJ set tomorrow (Saturday, March 21) at 3:00 pm ET – you can tune in here. Paul also applied his talents as a graphic artist to the project, designing all artwork and a limited edition Full Spectrum t-shirt, which is available via Bandcamp.

With airplay on national community and CBC Radio, including premieres on CBC q, Big City Small World, features on Exclaim!’s The Eh! List and NOW Magazine’s #NOWPlaying Spotify lists, the project has been a highly anticipated release. You can learn more about Paul and the album process through a series of in-depth chats and features with EARMILKThe Creative Imbalance PodcastCanadian BeatsCJRU’s The Cool Table, and Toronto Guardian, with more on the way.

The title, Full Spectrum, was inspired by the range of experiences that led to the music being created; the ups and downs of coming to terms with where Paul Chin found himself in his career post-Dancing Drums, as well as the wider range of musical expression and exploration he was now able to engage in. Paul faced a myriad of life-changing events, including marriage, and an immigration status in Canada lapsing (and a permanent residence application being rejected) – forcing him to leave the country to return to his birthplace of Cayman Islands for nine months until returning to get married. This period of time made Paul available to collaborate with friends he never had the time to work with, and practice creating and producing styles of music he never explored prior.

Full Spectrum is a 20-minute gaze into the musical fascinations and influences that have made him the artist he is today, with assists from an all-star cast of features. Paul deftly folds anime scores, dancehall, orchestral soul, hip-hop, and electronica into his sound, architecting a rich foundation for those joining him in the mix. The project includes CBC Searchlight winner, Desirée Dawson on lead single, Take It Or Leave It, Polaris Music Prize nominee, Shad (Take Two), Toronto folk artist Rebekah Hawker on Hard Times, and R&B songstress/member of Toronto duo TRP.P, pHoenix Pagliacci (on the Carnival rhythm-infused Slow Wine). Together, they deliver effortlessly killer performances which confirm Paul’s reputation as a captain of musical voyaging. The album was mixed and mastered by Toronto’s Freeza Chin (The Weeknd, Wiley, Boi-1da and Tre Mission).

The album kicked off with Take It Or Leave It,  a fresh tune featuring CBC Searchlight winner, Desirée Dawson. The song was created from an unlikely meeting and evolved into friendship through collaboration, much like the album’s focus. Listen to Take It Or Leave It here.

Paul Chin is a Polaris Music Prize-nominated producer that has risen from a pedigree of classical training, to discovering bedroom production; then years of releasing music as a beatmaker’s beatmaker; followed by almost a half-decade of inwardly-focused musical exploration, practice, and collaboration. The Toronto artist’s return to the market – while easy to be apprehensive about – begins a new chapter marked by this joyous and confident reflection of his vast musical vocabulary, and adoration for the artform as an electronic artist.
