Revolutionary Hydrogen Council Welcomes Hyundai Motor Company as New Co-Chair

The Hydrogen Council is delighted to welcome Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, as its new Co-Chair. He will be joining forces with Sanjiv Lamba, CEO of Linde. As the Council embarks on its next phase, focusing on stimulating hydrogen demand and establishing a global trade and investment framework, both Co-Chairs will closely collaborate with member CEOs.

Hyundai, a founding member of the Hydrogen Council, has been a pioneer in the hydrogen industry for nearly half of its existence. The company has achieved numerous milestones, including the production of the world’s first mass-market fuel cell electric passenger and heavy-duty vehicles (FCEVs), and holds the record for the world’s top-selling FCEVs. Hyundai’s commitment to a hydrogen society extends beyond mobility, offering business solutions across the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to storage, transportation, and utilization. This comprehensive leadership positions Hyundai not just as a primary offtaker, but as a global leader in the energy transition.

Jaehoon Chang, the new Co-Chair of the Hydrogen Council and CEO of Hyundai Motor, expressed his enthusiasm about his new role: “The Hydrogen Council plays a pivotal role in our global energy transition. I am thrilled to take on the role of Co-Chair and am eager to collaborate with other hydrogen leaders to actualize the Council’s vision and amplify the global impact of hydrogen.”

Jaehoon Chang succeeds Yoshinori Kanehana, Chairman of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., who served as Co-Chair for the past two and a half years. Kanehana reflected on his tenure: “It was a privilege to contribute to this significant global initiative and to help make substantial progress in promoting hydrogen as a key solution for a sustainable energy future. I am committed to continuing my support for the Council’s mission as a devoted member.”

Sanjiv Lamba, CEO of Linde and Co-Chair of the Hydrogen Council, expressed his gratitude to Kanehana and his team at Kawasaki Heavy Industries for their remarkable contribution to their shared mission. He also welcomed Jaehoon Chang as the new Co-Chair, stating: “His vision and experience will be invaluable as we navigate the opportunities and challenges in promoting hydrogen as a fundamental element of our clean energy future.”

Ivana Jemelkova, CEO of the Hydrogen Council, highlighted the critical juncture for the hydrogen industry: “Our collective efforts are crucial in accelerating hydrogen as a viable solution to climate change. I am excited to work alongside leaders like Jaehoon Chang and Sanjiv Lamba and their robust teams to propel this mission forward.”

The leadership transition occurred during the Hydrogen Council’s annual CEO event last week. Over 200 CEOs and senior executives from the world’s leading businesses and investors in hydrogen convened in Berlin, Germany. They gathered to review progress, discuss practical solutions, and reaffirm their commitment to collaboration.
