When Roxana Amed began producing this new album, she aimed to recover the songs she grew up with—those that shaped her appreciation for popular music and the cultural nature of Argentina.

Without a doubt, Serú Girán laid the foundation for that sound, and Charly García, as a composer, gave melody and poetry to that identity.

Salir de la melancolía” was part of the album Peperina (1981) by Serú Girán. Before the song begins, we’re surprised by an audio excerpt from a scene in the film Gilda (1946), starring Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford, in which a discussion between the two characters is heard as a kind of prologue. According to the lyrics, “a friend” struggles to free himself from a controlling and toxic masculinity, and the author invites him to “let her be what she wants to be” and to “break the chains of being a man and of possessing,” with an irresistible candor ahead of its time.

The song, in its original version, opens with a dizzying, piano-driven melody, sung by the members of Serú Girán themselves—another element that caught Amed’s attention, as she is known for her versatile vocal style.

For this production, Amed invited fellow Argentine Leo Genovese (Esperanza Spalding, Wayne Shorter), a renowned pianist with a career in the United States, who can blend the world of jazz with the essence of Argentine rock. Genovese performed and arranged the song.

She also wanted to share this Argentine musical treasure with musicians from other parts of the world. Thus, they brought in Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie, Saturday Night Live) on electric bass, and Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits, Bill Frisell) on drums.

The winds also join the ensemble, with Mark Small on saxophone and clarinet, and Joseph Monticello on flute.

The recording took place at Sear Sound in New York City, an iconic studio where artists like John Lennon and Sting have recorded, among other international and local figures.

In the version included on Amed’s new album, “Salir de la melancolía” embraces Argentine rock through jazz, with scat singing, keyboards, and distortions layered over classical pianos—offering a fresh revisit of Argentine music from a personal perspective.
