TONY BENNETT AND LADY GAGA’S JAZZ ROMANCE TOPS THE CHARTS AGAIN WITH DUO’S LOVE FOR SALE ALBUM HITTING #1 ON BILLBOARD’S JAZZ ALBUM CHARTS, ITUNES AND AMAZON IN FIRST WEEK OF RELEASE ON COLUMBIA/INTERSCOPE RECORDS
LOVE FOR SALE, CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF COLE PORTER MARKS BENNETT’S 10TH #1 JAZZ ALBUM
Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s jazz romance continues to top the charts with their new album celebrating the music of Cole Porter, LOVE FOR SALE, hitting #1 on Billboard’s Jazz Album charts, Amazon and iTunes in its first week of release, with Apple Music confirming it was also the highest streamed jazz album globally in its first week of release. The album also debuted at #8 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. The 95-year-old Bennett now has ten #1 albums topping Billboard’s Jazz Album charts and has 15 #1 Traditional Jazz Albums making him the artist with most #1 in that category. Bennett recently broke the Guinness World Record for being the “oldest artist to release an album of new material,” and now has a 59-year span of top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 – the longest span of top 10s for a living artist according to Billboard. This month marks almost 60 years since Cole Porter passed away and upon the release of LOVE FOR SALE the Cole Porter Trusts released this statement, “Representing the masterworks of Cole Porter’s legacy is both a supreme honor and an enormous responsibility. It requires the utmost dedication to both protecting Cole’s artistic vision and ensuring his music will continue to be listened to and loved by future generations. Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, singing and celebrating Cole’s music on their new album, LOVE FOR SALE, provide a perfect example of how to achieve those lofty goals in a way we are very proud to support.”
Bennett and Gaga’s first collaborative album, 2014’s CHEEK TO CHEEK, debuted at #1 on the Billboard album charts. The first single from that album, the Cole Porter Song, “Anything Goes” went to #1 on Billboard’s digital jazz single charts and inspired the two to devote their next album to Porter’s music. A mutual love for jazz music has been the impetus for their 10-year collaboration which began in 2011 when they recorded their first duet, “The Lady Is A Tramp” for Bennett’s DUETS II album. Throughout Bennett’s over 70-year recording career, he has championed the repertoire and musicians in his own recordings highlighted in 1955 by his first full-length studio album, CLOUD 7, cemented his standing as a jazz/pop singer with an all-star ensemble that included Al Cohn and Chuck Wayne. Lady Gaga, who embraced jazz growing up as Stefani Germanotta, credits Bennett for reigniting her love of the genre and enabled her to rediscover that part of her musical compass.
On November 28th, the CBS network will be airing the prime-time special “One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga” which was filmed at Radio City Music Hall during Tony and Gaga’s two sold-out shows celebrating Bennett’s 95th Birthday in August. An MTV Unplugged special will follow as well later this year.
