ARTHUR HANLON, CARLOS VIVES AND GOYO BRING BLUES AND CUMBIA TOGETHER IN “GOODBYE”
What happens when the Magdalena River, the birthplace of cumbia, meets the Mississippi River, the birthplace of the blues? “GOODBYE”, a powerful fusion of two cultures, cumbia and blues, is the new hit from acclaimed pianist Arthur Hanlon, alongside iconic Carlos Vives and the vibrant Goyo.
Vives and Goyo sing and lament a lost love while Hanlon’s piano cries the blues alongside their heartfelt vocals. The music video, filmed in Bogotá, beautifully illustrates Arthur’s deep connection with Colombia and the rich musical heritage that inspired this unique collaboration that has already been hailed as a musical masterpiece. “Charlie came to my house, and we were having gin and tonics,” reveals Arthur Hanlon about the collaboration. “We talked about the Magdalena River, where cumbia was born. I told him that Blues was born on the Mississippi River. What if the two rivers meet?” he adds.
Both rivers converge in this masterful song, with Vives, a composition maestro, bringing cumbia and lament to Arthur’s blues—a Detroit ‘gringo’ who fell in love with Latin music.
“When you tell me to look at this connection, I say what an amazing opportunity. What happiness,” says Carlos Vives. “This song is joy, more joy, even more joy. It’s a song that unites universes that aren’t improbable but very connected. The song sticks with you. And what Arthur does on the piano takes you to ecstasy. It’s something these Irish guys from Detroit have!”
Goyo, a close friend of Carlos and Arthur, was the “cherry on top,” bringing her distinctive voice to this lament.
“When I heard the song, I felt that internal cry,” reveals Goyo. “But what I liked most is that it’s a cry that smiles, brings happiness, and connects me to my Pacific and Colombian cultures. I listen to the song, which sounds like those Bogotá nights of rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop. Of all that sound from the new Colombian music. That comes from the roots but can reach any part of the world,” adds the singer.
Produced by Nicolás “Navi” de la Espriella, “GOODBYE” is the focus track of 2 Manos 1 Mundo, pianist Arthur Hanlon’s new album of exceptional collaborations. The album includes “Repetimos,” the Zumba hit with Yotuel and Darell that reached Billboard’s Tropical Top 10; “Bala Perdida” with Angela Aguilar, whose video is trending on YouTube; the cumbia “Egoísta” with Ana Bárbara; the funk track “Sol” with Manuel Medrano and Nia Skyfer; and Brazilian samba, “Delirio” featuring Tiago IORC.
