Creator of The Simpsons and Futurama Brings New Series to Netflix Called Disenchantment
We are one week away from the premiere of Disenchantment, Matt Groening’s new animated series on Netflix.
Matt Groening is best known for creating the longstanding animated series, The Simpsons, as well as the beloved animated sci-fi comedy series, Futurama, which unfortunately ended in 2013.
If you’re a fan, or at least have seen episodes here and there, of either The Simpsons of Futurama, you’ll find the animation style of Disenchantment to be endearing in its familiarity. You can be sure that the characters will be round-eyed and virtually chinless like all of Groening’s shows.
The plot of Disenchantment revolves around Princess Bean, voiced by Abbi Jacobson of Broad City fame, and her adventures in the kingdom of Dreamland. She is followed by two companions: Elfo, an elf voiced by Nate Flaxon, and Luci, a demon voiced by the hysterical Eric Andre. Other voices include Joe Dimaggio and Billy West, two longtime collaborators of Groening.
Groening spoke to Collider at the previous San Diego ComicCon about what to expect from the new series. What’s unique about this show compared to Groening’s previous works is its serialized narrative. With The Simpsons and Futurama, there are few details that create an overarching plot. Episodes are unconnected and can be watched as stand-alone stories. Disenchantment, however, will have an ongoing narrative, each episode continuing where the previous one ends. Concerning the complexities of telling an epic fantasy tale, Groening said, “You got to tell a big story, and within that story, you have to tell a bunch of little stories and if it’s good fantasy, things are not what they seem to be.”
We’ve seen Matt Groening tackle sci-fi and slice-of-life with sarcasm and absurdity. Now, let’s see how many laughs he can get through the fantasy genre. Disenchantment premiers next Friday, August 17th on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.
