DANNY BROWN RELEASES NEW SINGLE “COPYCATS” FEATURING UNDERSCORES
On the heels of announcing a new album and headline tour, releasing a critically acclaimed new single and video, “Starburst”, and a surprise single with Fred Again.., “OGdub”, Detroit icon, boundary-pushing rapper and hip-hop experimentalist Danny Brown returns with a new single and video, “Copycats” featuring underscores. The second single from his forthcoming seventh studio album Stardust (out November 7th via Warp Records), “Copycats” is high-octane, featuring rapid-fire beats, glitchy synths, and Underscores’ warped, computerized vocals, creating a wild, hyperpop-fueled collision with Danny Brown’s unflinching style.
In September, Danny Brown released “Starburst”—a stylistically restless and shapeshifting track with a cinematic and cerebral video, giving Danny the perfect canvas to flex his unmatched lyrical dexterity. Additionally, Danny Brown announced a 21-stop US headline tour, supported by underscores and Femtanyl, kicking off November 10 in Boston, MA, including stops in Chicago, Los Angeles, and many more, before wrapping up in New York, NY at Warsaw. In recent years, Danny Brown has solidified his status as one of rap’s most fearless innovators. In 2023, he released SCARING THE HOES, a critically acclaimed collaborative album with JPEGMAFIA, followed by his deeply personal sixth solo record, Quaranta, praised by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Stereogum, and more for its vulnerability and clarity. Since the release of Quaranta, Brown brought his headline tour, The Quaranta ‘24 Tour, across the United States and Europe for a sprawling 44 dates, bringing his singular energy to major cities around the world. With both projects earning widespread acclaim, he’s continued to push boundaries stylistically while opening a new chapter in his career marked by honesty, resilience, and reinvention.
Since trailblazing into the hip-hop scene with XXX, released on Fool’s Gold in 2011, Danny Brown has whipped ravers into frenzies across the world, appeared on late-night TV, worked with some of the biggest names in music, and donned multiple magazine covers. He’s also managed to bridge old and new-school rap royalty (collabs from Earl Sweatshirt to Q-Tip to Kendrick Lamar) and link with the most grailed underground electronic record labels. These days, the lifelong Motor City native is spending his days in Austin, Texas, where he’s living a sober life and tapes his comedy podcast The Danny Brown Show with YMH Studios. Featuring guest appearances from friends and co-collaborators like JPEGMAFIA, Hannibal Buress, Adam Ray, Ali Macofsky, Logic, and Code Orange’s Jami Morgan, The Danny Brown Show reveals Brown’s humanity while also giving him a platform to allow his sharp sense of humor to run wild.
Stardust marks another groundbreaking chapter for Danny Brown, an artist who has continually redefined indie rap on his own terms. His first album written in sobriety, Stardust finds Brown revealing a new level of vulnerability and creative clarity, stepping into territory few rappers would dare to approach. Danny, who has a long history of spotting talent early (working with the likes of Purity Ring, Charli XCX, Evian Christ, andAshnikko before they blew up), tapped an expansive roster of musical outsiders across this album, including underscores, Jane Remover, Frost Children, Quadeca, Femtanyl, JOHNNASCU, 8485, IssBrokie, Nnamdi, Ta Ukraika, and Zheani. Pulling from experimental pop and underground electronics, the final product is messy, emotional, and held together with a strange kind of clarity. Danny is the center of gravity within the musical world he’s curating and the link between all the artists and features, who have been mutually inspired by one another’s work. Known for his experimental style and avant-garde vision, he has endured where many of his peers faded, consistently pushing rap’s boundaries. While his past work leaned into darker tones, this record introduces a newfound lightness—still sharp, inventive, and unafraid to challenge conventional production and storytelling.
