ERIN LECOUNT RELEASES NEW EP I AM DIGITAL, I AM DIVINE
Rising alternative-pop star Erin LeCount has unveiled her new EP I Am Digital, I Am Divine. The project arrives hot on the heels of her debut headline show last month, which sold out immediately and was oversubscribed 5 times the venue’s capacity. It follows lead single ‘Marble Arch’ and her fragile but defiant hit ‘Silver Spoon’, Erin’s biggest track to date, which went viral online and has racked up over 7M streams globally.
Erin’s agile touch is showcased on the production for ‘Godspeed’, an intricate pop song about the girl that one of her exes dated after her. Already a cult classic among her wildly dedicated fans, it was written as an ode to her younger self and a warning to her ex partner’s new love as Erin explains: “This song is the feeling of your head spinning, frustration and fear – the lyrics tell the story of a repeating cycle of hurt that you experienced and now have to witness play out again to someone else. The girl in question actually features in the backing vocals of the chorus and is now a friend.”
The cherubic 22-year-old is a visionary sonic architect who is quickly becoming a standout voice in alternative pop, garnering a dedicated fanbase for her escapist and confessional storytelling. She is entirely self-sufficient; writing, producing and releasing all her music from the sanctuary of her garden shed studio. Drawing inspiration from genre-blurring artists like Fiona Apple, Imogen Heap and FKA Twigs, Erin’s music feels like a diary cracked open, filled with moments of vulnerability, growth, resilience and all the beautiful messiness of youth.
On her transfixing upcoming EP I Am Digital, I Am Divine, Erin’s dreamy and atmospheric production crafts complex real stories about her intimate relationships with herself and other people. The Covid-19 lockdown changed everything for Erin. At 17, she locked herself in her bedroom, learning to produce on Logic, writing songs, and posting them online. She began writing with other artists but the experience reminded her of childhood pressures. Instead, Erin embraced total creative control, much like fellow singer-producers Grimes and Caroline Polachek. Erin’s music reflects both her raw, commanding energy and the influence of her mother’s ballet career. The beauty of Swan Lake, which played on repeat at home, has shaped her visuals and aesthetic sensibility.
The insular realities Erin LeCount evokes in her music sound and feel like delicate flowers forced to bloom in Winter. “Me and my voice do not do what a perfect pop singer is supposed to do,” she says. “My songs are questioning everything and I think my fans are too—I’m a perfectionist and I want to know every answer.” But it’s that attempt at transcendence through the cold that captures something of what it means to be divine in a digital age.
