rtx1i06o

Jim Obergefell and Judith Kasen-Windsor, namesakes of the landmark Supreme Court cases Obergefell v. Hodges and Windsor v. United States, announced their endorsement of Joe Biden for President of the United States. In a joint statement, they cited Joe Biden as “our community’s greatest ally” and “a man of empathy, compassion and grace.”

Our names, Obergefell and Windsor, are affixed to two Supreme Court cases that plowed the legal ground for marriage equality in the United States.

Five years ago today, we won that fight for the freedom to marry because of an ally in the White House, Joe Biden. His heartfelt comments on Meet the Press years before sparked a national conversation that forced change because it was the right thing to do.  Today, we proudly endorse Joe Biden for president of the United States.

Joe is our community’s greatest ally. He is committed to not only passing the Equality Act, but advancing laws and protections that will make all forms of discrimination against LGBTQ+ people illegal. He is the leader our country needs so desperately right now, someone who can bridge the divides that Donald Trump has worked so hard to dredge.

Joe Biden is a man of empathy, compassion and grace. In governing from these values, he will restore the dignity of the office and our country’s standing in the world. He is a man who realizes that we are not a static society. Our culture is ever changing and we must change with it.

As we honor today, we also remember Edie Windsor who became an international symbol for LGBTQ+ rights when she refused to give in to the idea that “equality for everyone” was just a notion for some and a right for a few. A Biden Administration will make sure that, as we evolve, we live up to those ideals of equal opportunity, and life, liberty and justice for all.
