KARIN ANN USHERS IN A BOLD NEW ERA WITH FOLK-INFUSED SINGLE “i was never yours”

Critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, and actress Karin Ann opens an evocative new chapter in her artistic journey with the release of her latest single, “i was never yours”, available today on all major streaming platforms.

Produced by Benjamin Lazar Davis (Maya Hawke) and co-written by Karin Ann alongside Harrison Whitford (Phoebe Bridgers), Chelsea Balan, and acclaimed singer-songwriter and recording artist Suki Waterhouse, the track offers a wistful, genre-defying blend of folk, country, rock, and cinematic textures. “i was never yours” is the first in a series of new releases from Karin Ann leading into early 2026.

Of the new track, Karin Ann says; “writing this song came about very naturally and very quickly. I had the start of the song in my notes and voice memos on my phone for a few months before the session and in the session it took us maybe half a day to get a full demo done. It was a very fun process and I got to work with very cool people on it and I think the song reflects that. This song is about choosing freedom, and i think the whole process of creating it was very freeing too.”

With its dreamy, introspective soundscape, “i was never yours” is steeped in emotional nuance and understated storytelling. Anchored by a rhythmic, stomping beat and lush acoustic guitars, the track unfolds with atmospheric pedal steel and a delicately layered fiddle, creating a rustic yet ethereal feel. Lyrically, Karin Ann lays bare the ache of choosing freedom over comfort – a raw, honest exploration of heartbreak, detachment, and the fear of settling.

“I was never yours” also marks the beginning of a new creative era for Karin Ann, following her 2024 debut album through the telescope, which earned widespread praise for its thematic depth and sonic ambition. Tackling subjects like gender equality, LGBTQ+ identity, mental health and toxic love, the album showcased Karin Ann’s fearless lyricism and genre-spanning artistry- from brutalist folk to gothic disco-rock. NME called it “a confident and unflinching debut,” applauding its existential weight and cohesive vision. “i was never yours” launches her into a new direction both sonically and personally, as she incorporates not only new genres into her music, but also her Eastern European and Middle Eastern heritage.

Outside of music, Karin Ann continues to build her presence as a compelling actress. She appeared as Maria in the critically acclaimed miniseries The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and has also brought cinematic storytelling to her own work. Her two-part music video series for “a stranger with my face” and “favorite star” – co-starring Ashley Moore and Gus Kenworthy, directed by the award-winning duo TUSK – earned Best Music Video at the 2023 Top Shorts Film Festival. Their collaboration extended to the visually arresting video for “i don’t believe in God,” featuring a powerful guest appearance by Imogen Heap.

For Karin Ann, music has always been about more than just sound – it’s about message, meaning, and emotional truth. Her songs are stories first: rich narratives shaped by lyrics that resonate deeply. This spirit continues to guide her evolving sound, as she explores a more folk-leaning direction rooted in vulnerability and authenticity.

As she expands her artistic footprint with upcoming film projects and more original music on the horizon, Karin Ann is solidifying her place as a dynamic, multifaceted voice – unafraid to cross genres, cultures, and creative boundaries.
