Molchat Doma Release Live at Panorama Hotel Via Sacred Bones

Last fall, Belarusian post-punk / synth-pop group Molchat Doma released Belaya Polosa, an album that “has so many layers, and is so wonderfully delivered, it feels elevated” (Associated Press). Today via Sacred Bones, the band digitally releases Live at Panorama Hotel, a live 3-song performance with an accompanying longform video (a 12” vinyl copy of the recording is also available for pre-order). Live at Panorama Hotel is the band’s first official live release, and was recorded last year while they were touring Europe at the iconic Panorama Hotel in Slovakia — the striking architectural monument featured on the cover of their 2018 breakthrough album, Etazhi. Celebrated for channeling a distinct Soviet-era darkwave aesthetic, Molchat Doma bring their haunting sound to life on this recording with three fan-favorite tracks: “Toska” and “Sudno (Boris Ryzhy)” from Etazhi, and “Chernye Cvety” from Belaya Polosa.

The recording, which captures the raw energy of their live performances, goes hand in hand with a legendary performance video, directed by Alina Pasok, shot in a snowy Slovakian landscape with the Panorama towering over the trio. “When we released Etazhi in 2018, we joked that for its 10th anniversary, we would play a live show at the Panorama Hotel,” says the band. “Well, we’re happy it happened sooner than planned.”

This week, Molchat Doma will embark on a North American tour in support of Belaya Polosa. The album is a testament to change in difficult times, a love letter to the digital pulse of the ‘90s, and a technicolor reinvention of the band’s somber dancefloor anthems. Drawing influence from acts such as Depeche Mode, The Cure, Talk Talk, and others, Belaya Polosa propels them into a new direction while retaining their cold minimalist delivery they’re known for. The basement grime and dirty tape-head sound of their previous work are now making space for digital luster and shimmering production values. As Post-Punk praises, the album is “a collision of warehouse club sounds, industrialized rhythms, and vocals that resonate like the sheets of iron in the iron curtain.”
