Alejandro Fernandez, a two-time Grammy winner and icon in Mexican music, returned to Chicago’s United Center for his tour De Rey a Rey, honoring his late father Vicente Fernandez. After Vicente passed in December 2021, his family decided to celebrate and honor his legacy in a 27-date tour across North America. It was a tribute filled with nostalgia, Mexican pride, and a multi-generational celebration of music and culture.
Alejandro Fernandez, also known as “El Potrillo De Mexico” has carried the family legacy through his children. Camila Fernandez, his daughter, has joined him on tour. Camila, who has been singing since the age of four, was the opening act. Singing her hit songs like “Pudimos Ser” and “Todo Todo”, Camila received a standing ovation all across the arena. She later came back out during her father’s show to perform a few heartfelt duos with Alejandro. The crowd and myself got to witness an incredible moment in history, where not one, not two, but three generations of music echoed throughout the largest arena in Chicago.
Dressed in a traditional charro suit, Alejandro Fernandez graced the stage immediately after his daughter’s performance. He captivated the audience with his renditions of the classics like “Volver Volver,” “El Rey,” and “Aca Entre Nos.” A profound feeling of nostalgia was felt, as many people in the crowd grew up listening to these anthems. Though the show is a tribute to his father, Alejandro assured he sang his biggest hits, leaving the crowd with no time to relax or catch their breath. Each and every song was sung along to, making this night truly unforgettable.
Alejandro’s charisma shined throughout the night. His energy and interaction with the crowd, along with the impressive visuals and lighting, made this concert visually and emotionally captivating. The spirit of the mariachi legend was felt in every corner of the United Center. It was a night where music transcended generations, bringing together fans old and new to celebrate the rich tapestry of Mexican musical heritage.
