OVRKAST. SHARES NEW SINGLE “PLAY THIS” – OUT NOW
Following the release of “Wata” (feat. Niontay), Oakland rapper and producer Ovrkast. has shared a new single, “Play This” – out now via THREE TIMES LOUDER, alongside an accompanying music video. Leaning into a Frankenstein character in both the video and the single artwork, Ovrkast. raps: “I’m from the city where they scar yo face like zillakami / They do you dirty, it’s some killas stomping really raunchy”, referencing both the scars on the face of Frankenstein and City Morgue member Zillakami. This single arrives on the heels of Ovrkast. being named to On The Radar Radio‘s Class of 2026, his recent production credits and feature on Samara Cyn‘s new EP Detour, and the release of his critically-acclaimed sophomore album While The Iron Is Hot from last year –– Ovrkast.’s conceptual breakthrough record that preceded his stint opening for Saba on The Big Picture Tour. With contributions from Vince Staples, Samara Cyn, Saba, MAVI, Malaya, and Frsh Waters, the album blended his signature production with introspective lyricism, a too-good-to-be-true intersection of Larry June’s confidence, Madlib and J Dilla’s chopped production, and Earl Sweatshirt’s diaristic calm –– leading to critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, The FADER, Hypebeast, and even Billboard, who hailed it as one of “The 50 Best Albums of 2025 (So Far)” and named Ovrkast. as their July Rookie of the Month.
Hailed for his jazz-influenced production style, Ovrkast. has made a name for himself as one of the new faces of Bay Area hip-hop for his meditative lyricism and genre-revitalizing sound. Over the past year, Ovrkast. has quietly positioned himself as one of the most vital voices in independent rap. From linking with GRAMMY-winning super producer Cardo for their joint tape KAST GOT WINGS to joining MAVI on the shadowbox tour, he’s continued to blur the line between producer and rapper with intention and ease. His production work has been just as prolific — landing cuts with Drake, (“Red Button“ and “The Shoe Fits”), Earl Sweatshirt (“EL TORO COMBO MEAL”), redveil (“automatic”), and MAVI (“Chiasma” and “Reason”) — while standout appearances on tracks like Charlotte rapper MESSIAH!‘s “silent heel” and his 2023 EP RESET! have only expanded his creative reach. Leading up to the release of While The Iron Is Hot, he dropped a strong run of singles, including “I’M ON”, which was paired with a satirical video featuring his alter ego Lil Tanner, and “SMALL TALK”, earning looks from Billboard, Rolling Stone, Bootleg Kev, where he made a beat and freestyled over it live on the spot, Apple Music for an interview on The Plug Radio, and others.
