Los Angeles-based horror inspired darkwave band Provoker have released their sophomore album, Demon Compass via YEAR0001 (V**gra Boys, Yung Lean, Bladee, etc.). With it they’ve perfected the languid post-punk that made them an artist to watch for many with their debut Body Jumper, reemerging from an in-between world once again with deep hooks and plaintive, bright melodies to create the dragging, atmospheric ache of melancholia. A lyric video for the project’s focus track “Little Ghost” will also be released at 8am PST and will be live on their YouTube channel.
The band gave fans an early taste of the 12-track project with previous singles, “Debt Collector,” “Valley Ghoul,”and “It’s In My Head” all which arrived with horror inspired music videos that created the Demon Compassuniverse. Using two exceptional directors, Gustav Stegfors and Olle Knutson respectively, the band brought the confrontation of the human experience to life using an immortal repo man, young ghouls and giant bugs to confront inner and outer demons.
Demon Compass includes a collaboration from fellow west coast musician Eyedress on their single “Freezing Alive” along with additional production work from Zach Fogarty (Girlpool, Jean Dawson, The Blssm). The new project comes after Provoker’s recent tour run while opening for Glaive across the U.S and also playing three headline shows of their own. The band will be celebrating the end of their tour run and album with an album listening party at LA’s Going Underground Records from 4-6pmPST where they will be signing copies of the record for fans in attendance.
Crafted under the influence of a city where daily events flirt with myths, legends, and curses, this sophomore album channels rich darkness to tell a story of desire, loss, and confrontation. Written while waiting for the release of the band’s esoteric yet pop-oriented debut Body Jumper, Provoker found themselves shifting their focus from projecting familiar, shadowy figures to embodying them — if only as a means of accessing the dregs of their internal world and confronting the demons that lurk even deeper. Demon Compass is a collection of songs that work together as an experience taking the band’s interest in horror iconography and desolate soundscapes to tell introspective stories about desire, loss, and growth.
