RANKIN MACINNIS & THE BROKEN REEDS RELEASE DEBUT SINGLE, BRING IT HOME
Halifax based, East-Coast indie folk, pop and Celtic staples, Rankin MacInnis & The Broken Reeds, release their debut single, Bring It Home. The feel good, foot stomping melodic earworm kicks off the newest chapter for the band and also marks the first official musical release under Rankin’s name, along with his band, despite having been immersed in music as a performer since he was a child. Bring It Home centres around a longing to slow down life, if not pause, and remain in the moment. Flawless East Coast fiddles, and bagpipes combined with flutes and sax sonically drive the track while Rankin’s honest and nostalgic lyrics and melodies anchor it.
“You spend your entire life looking ahead, and then all of a sudden, you’re counting months, not minutes, and you want the world to pause…even for a second,” shares Rankin. “You realize it never will, and you really have start living, truly living, L I V I N, both for yourself and with the people you love. Bring It Home echoes those feelings, whether it be from a friend, family member or a loved one. And it’s the perfect song to start this next chapter.”
Recorded between SoundPark Studios (Jamie Foulds) and Alex Meade’s home studio, Bring It Home sonically not only sets the tone for what’s to come next from Rankin MacInnis & The Broken Reeds, but also marks the group’s first original song that gave them a united identity. “It doesn’t sound like the Rankin Family and it doesn’t sound like Great Big Sea, though it does feel like we would be playing on the same stage. It’s our East Coast sound…and the tides of the East Coast are rising!”
Bring It Home is a heartfelt reminder to stay grounded and remember your roots. While its themes of love, distance, and reconciliation are timeless, the song takes on a personal dimension through its creation. Bandmate Luke Levy originally wrote the track, drawing inspiration from experiences that closely mirrored Rankin’s own life, ultimately leading Rankin to make it his own. Recorded with producer Alex Meade (reuniting after their work with Party Boots) the song was meticulously built from the drums up and features performances from Nova Scotia collective The Broken Reeds. “It’s a tale as old as time. We grow, we grow apart, we come back together. Sometimes love hurts, but, if it is real – it endures,” adds Rankin.
To say it’s been a remarkable journey for Rankin would be an understatement: from performing in front of Queen Elizabeth II to sharing the stage with The White Stripes (as seen in Under Great White Northern Lights), to the Vancouver Olympics, Dollywood alongside Dolly Parton and placing third at the World Pipe Band Championships with the Gaelic College Pipe Band, it’s been an adventure, and continues to be. Having already been crowned Music Nova Scotia’s Entertainer of the Year, Rankin and his band come with an expected big sound. Together, the band has built an award-winning music festival (Blueberry Jam) and an award winning, first-of-its-kind concert series, Rankin’s Winter Warmers at Halifax’s Marquee Ballroom.
