The Two Alamo Records Labelmates Prove Their Melodic Prowess, Bring a Home Movie Aesthetic to the Video
Though they come from different parts of the country, Florida’s Rod Wave and Chicago’s Lil Durk have a similar ability to express and evoke raw emotion through melody. Connecting for the first time, the two kindred spirits and labelmates share “Heart On Ice” (Remix), a new music video. A soulful Southern rap ballad, “Heart On Ice” finds Rod working through his feelings, attempting to present an ice-cold face to the world and disguise his inner pain: “No one could understand, I had way too much aggression/That built over the years from my abandoned adolescence/See I done been lied to, backstabbed, and heartbroken/I wanted to cry but I was too afraid to open,” rhymes Rod. In his brand new verse, Lil Durk echoes Rod’s conflict, reflecting on how he had to numb the pain to escape poverty: “Plus my granny ain’t understand, I reminisced bout a hundred grand/Came from nothin, don’t understand/I put ketchup on Wonder Bread.”
Filmed in a grainy, home video aesthetic, the video finds the two Alamo Records artists retreating to a remote house, finally able to grab a moment’s peace to express their true feelings. After announcing the remix and video on Instagram last night, Rod Wave promptly gained 8000 new followers.
Along with “Popular Loner” (11 million YouTube views and a recent Genius Verified video), the Pitchfork-approved “Heart On Ice” is one of the standout tracks from PTSD, Rod Wave’s new mixtape. Released in June, PTSD collects some of Rod’s most soulful, introspective, and hard-hitting work to date, including the guitar-speckled recounting of his rise “Tru Story,” and the brilliantly-sung “Hard Times” (1.9 million streams on its official YouTube audio). The new mixtape shows Rod’s romantic side with the devotional love song “Paint The Sky Red,“ and reaches a celebratory peak with “Calabasas,” which features an appearance from rap legend E-40. With production from Go Grizzly, TNT, D Major, Yung Tago, and more, PTSD is available everywhere via Alamo Records.
Rod Wave recently wrapped up the “Heart On Ice Tour,” which toured several cities around Florida and Georgia before bouncing to the West Coast in August. The St. Petersburg, Florida native is currently preparing to support Kevin Gates on the nationwide “I’m Him Tour,” launching October 12th in Chicago.
