Anberlin’s performance at The Novo on March 14th, 2025, was a nostalgic, high-energy celebration of their iconic sound, marking a perfect blend of the old and the new. The band, known for their emotionally charged lyrics and anthemic rock sound, delivered a set that reminded the packed crowd why they’ve been a force in the alt-rock scene for over two decades.

The evening opened with a rush of energy, as Anberlin stormed onto the stage, launching into “Never Take Friendship Personal”, a track that instantly electrified the audience. The crowd erupted, singing every word back at the band, setting the tone for the night. The iconic soaring guitar riffs and fill-in singer Matty Mullins [Memphis May Fire] signature vocals were just as crisp as ever, proving that time hasn’t dulled the band’s edge.

Over the course of the night, Anberlin played a perfect mix of fan favorites from albums like “Cities,” “New Surrender,” and “Never Take Friendship Personal.” Highlights included “Paperthin Hymn,” which had the crowd in a collective sing-along, and “The Feel Good Drag,” which resonated deeply with the long-time fans. Each song was infused with the raw passion and energy that have always defined Anberlin’s sound. Matty’s voice, while undoubtedly seasoned, still held that unmistakable emotive quality that elevates the band’s music to something greater than just rock.

The band’s stage presence was undeniably strong. The lighting at The Novo added a theatrical feel to the show, with spotlights perfectly capturing the intensity of each song. Bassist Deon Rexroat and drummer Nate Young kept the rhythm tight, providing a rock-solid backbone to the soaring guitars of Joseph Milligan and Matty’s magnetic performance. The chemistry among the band members was palpable, each song feeling like a seamless continuation of the one before.

The energy in the room was palpable throughout the night, and it felt as if the band and the fans were feeding off each other. Between songs, Matty spoke candidly to the crowd, expressing how grateful the band was for their continued support, making the show feel intimate despite the size of the venue.

As the band closed with “Godspeed,” it was clear that Anberlin has earned their place as one of the most influential rock bands of the 2000s. The crowd, chanting their name in unison, was a testament to the enduring legacy of their music.

Anberlin was supported by fellow 2000’s rock staples Copeland, who performed their album “In Motion” in its entirety, as well as bands Spitalfield and local opener Rival Tides. Each band set the stage for an amazing night of music and have the crowd feeling overwhelmed with energy before Anberlin took the stage.
