One of Latin music’s biggest stars, the Grammy-nominated and 5x Latin Grammy-nominated artist Ángela Aguilar took the award for Mariachi/Ranchera Song of the Year for her song “Por El Contrario” featuring Becky G and Leonardo Aguilar during one of Latin music’s biggest nights, the Premios Lo Nuestro ceremony. She also delivered two breathtaking performances during the telecast including a moving tribute to the late Paquita La Del Barrio with Pepe and Leonardo Aguilar that kicked off the show, and an electrifying rendition of her newly released song “Bala Perdida” with Arthur Hanlon – images below.

In one of the night’s most memorable moments, Ángela dedicated her award for Mariachi/Ranchera Song of the Year to the immigrants and their families in the US, shining light on the crucial issue. As a Mexican-American woman, the topic of immigration is one that hits very close to home for Ángela and one she vehemently looks to support throughout her work. She spoke about the long ties her family has had with immigration as people living in both the US and Mexico. She celebrated her grandfather Antonio Aguilar who she shared was deported multiple times and ultimately went to sell out 13 Madison Square Gardens as he established a legacy for himself and his family – a true representation of the American Dream, and one that Ángela beautifully carries on with pride.

ÁNGELA AGUILAR SPEECH AT PREMIOS LO NUESTRO:

“I want to dedicate this award to all the immigrants, to the situation that they are currently living in. My grandfather was deported four times, but that was the same man who sold out Madison Square Garden thirteen times. Yes you can, we are with you, your voice is priceless, and we, as Mexican-Americans, we can’t let go the opportunity to say: ¡Qué viva México!”

The night brought together one of Mexico’s most treasured families, the Águilars, who individually, Ángela, her brother, Leonardo, and their father, regional Mexican music legend, Pepe Aguilar, have all reached colossal heights with years of hard work and honing their crafts. It was incredibly meaningful for the Aguilar family to honor one of música Mexicana’s biggest forces and icons, Paquita La Del Barrio. Together, they performed a striking medley of Paquita’s essential songs including “Me Saludas a la Tuya” and “Tres Veces Te Engañé”.
